The 2016 Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday lands on Monday January 18, and because it is a federal holiday this means many government offices, including the post office will be closed. While MLK Day is celebrated on Monday, Jan. 18, Martin Luther King Jr.’s actual birthday is Jan. 15.
MLK Day is the second federal holiday of the year, but recognizing MLK Day as a federal holiday.was a work in process at first, as not all states deemed this day a holiday. Four days after the April 4, 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. the wheels were put in motion to have MLK Day recognized as a federal holiday. This is when U.S. Representative John Conyers introduced the bill to Congress to make Martin Luther King’s birthday a federal holiday.
It took a while for states to sign on making MLK Day one of the 10 federal holidays observed each year. In 1974 Massachusetts, Connecticut and Illinois were the first three states to recognize this holiday. In 1984 the third Monday in January was finally signed into law as a federal holiday observing Martin Luther King Day.
