“Marinda has seven autoimmune diseases, most recently a diagnosis of lupus,” shared choreographer Emily Bufferd on Jan. 30, as the reason for tomorrow’s bi-coastal dance fundraiser in support of the talented artist. On Jan. 31., top teachers and choreographers in N.Y. will be hosting the Marinda* Davis Fundraiser, while those on the west coast will be holding the Marinda* Davis Fundraiser II LA Edition, all proceeds to go directly to Davis to help pay for the many medical bills due to her various conditions.
An incredibly gifted educator, choreographer, and Master teacher, Marinda Davis who is described as a “beacon of light in this dance industry”, and was tied for second runner up for the 2015 Capezio Ace award for choreographic excellence, has been going through many severe health challenges for most of her life. According to Bufferd, “She at one point had been able to teach and choreograph with assistants, but now she unfortunately is no longer able, and is currently in L.A. being treated.” In addition to the chronic inflammatory disease of lupus, Davis has also been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, wherein the immune system attacks the thyroid gland.
New York’s day of dance for Marinda consists of six classes taught by some of the industry’s top choreographers: Sheila Barker (Jazz), Derek Mitchell (Street Jazz), Phil Orsano (Contemporary Fusion), Hannah Frederick (Contemporary Fusion), Bufferd (Contemporary), Stephanie Noble (Repertoire), and Emily Brown (Repertoire). In Los Angeles, classes will be taught by top choreographers: Cat Cogliandro (Contemporary), and Amy Mattison (Jazz). Pre-register online for the New York dance event, or Los Angeles dance event. Donations are also accepted on the benefits page, for those who can’t attend, but wish to show support.
According to Bufferd “This is going to be an ongoing series of events to try to help Miranda, as her medical bills are insane. I’m planning to produce a benefit show later in the spring on her behalf as well.
Miranda, the dance community on both coasts are cheering for you!
