The Republican politicians Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz are both Bible believing Christians who want to be elected President of the United States. Headline news was made yesterday when the Cruz campaign claimed Rubio said to Cruz’s Christian clergyman father, Rafael Cruz who was reading a Bible, “Got a good book there. Not many answers in it.” In reality Rubio said, “Got a good book there. All the answers are in there.” This lie about Rubio was done by the Cruz campaign to hurt Rubio with Bible believing voters. Ted Cruz fired the person he held responsible for the misinformation, his communications director, Rick Tyler.
There is a lot of discussion currently going on regarding dirty tricks in the Cruz campaign. However, what is not being discussed is if Rubio is correct in stating that all the answers are in the Bible. This is a very important question because it causes people who have assumed the Bible is the word of God and does have all the answers to stop and to think with their innate God-given reason. Thinking is the first step in freeing yourself from Christianity and from all of the “revealed”/hearsay religions and from all unreasonable beliefs.
We can determine if Rubio’s statement that all the answers are in the Bible is true by objectively examining the Bible. For example, most people want to be happy. Looking to the Bible for how to be happy we find Psalm 137:9 which teaches, “Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.” This could not make anyone who values children and life happy at all.
How should children who curse their parents be treated and dealt with? Exodus has the answer. Exodus 21:17 commands, “And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.” Jesus was in favor of this crime against children as is shown in Mark 7:1-13 when Jesus criticizes the Pharisees for not following this Hebrew Bible/Old Testament command. In his criticism Jesus (or whoever wrote Mark) refers to it as a “commandment from God.” This shows what a sick and twisted image Jesus had of The Supreme Intelligence/God.
If someone is looking for an answer regarding how to treat gay men they can find it in Leviticus 20:13 which teaches, “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.”
Religious people can find the answer to the question of, is it permissible for people to work on the sabbath, in the Bible. (This would be the Jewish sabbath since the Bible is a product of the ancient Jews.) Exodus 31:14 commands, “Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.” This is based in large part on Genesis 2:2-3 which claims God rested on the seventh day after six days of work creating the world and Universe. The Greek philosopher Celsus wrote in On The True Doctrine that this makes The Supreme Intelligence/God appear as a laborer who needed a rest after doing hard work!
The Bible also answers questions about what should be done with witches. The answer, like all of the above, is to kill them. Exodus 22:18 is very clear on this. It commands, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” Belief in witches is juvenile and foolish. The Bible’s command to kill witches caused the famous Christian apologist C.S. Lewis a lot of trouble in his best selling book Mere Christianity. This is brought out in detail in my book An Answer to C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity.
The Bible is loaded with misogynistic trash. Therefore, if someone wanted answers about the role of women in society they would find an answer at 1 Timothy 2:11-12 which teaches, “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.”
If someone is looking for answers regarding slavery they will find the Bible never outlaws or forbids one person owning as property another person. In fact, the Bible claims God gave specific instructions to the Jews regarding slavery. They were not to own their fellow Jews as slaves, but they were instructed to take all of their slaves from the Gentile people and their children who they could own “for ever” (Leviticus 25:44-46). And the Bible even has answers for slaves who wonder how they should act. 1 Peter 2:18 teaches, “Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.”
Rubio and the Bible believing US politicians can find answers in the Bible on how they should vote regarding US foreign policy and the Jewish state of Israel. Isaiah 60:12 claims that God said regarding Israel, “For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.”
One claim made in the Bible which is very rarely ever preached about or discussed by the faithful is found at Matthew 27:50-53. These verses claim that when Jesus died on a cross, graves in cemeteries around Jerusalem opened up and the dead people in the graves came back to life on that Friday. They then hung out near their graves until sunrise on Sunday morning when Jesus allegedly rose from the dead, too. At that time the zombies in the cemeteries around Jerusalem went into the city of Jerusalem and “appeared unto many.” Since Rubio said the Bible has all the answers, and all of the presidential hopefuls, with the possible exception of Bernie Sanders, say they believe in the Bible (Hillary Clinton actually said in an interview with the New York Times, “I think the whole Bible is real”) it is fair to ask Rubio and his fellow believers what happened to the Bible zombies. What did they do when they went into Jerusalem? Did they stay there or travel around Judea and the Middle East? Did they take part in the Jewish-Roman wars? Did they die again or are they still here on Earth?
The World Union of Deists believes Rubio has given Deists an important talking point when he claimed the Bible has all the answers. We can use this opportunity to get people to realize the Bible has horrific answers to life’s questions. The more we do this, the more we will get people to trade in their harmful man-made “holy” books for their innate God-given reason and we will all benefit from the amazing good that produces.
