So there it happened. My first set of Siberian mink eyelashes—who would have thunk? Being blessed with rather long lashes I never thought I go for lash extensions. That was until a very convincing PR woman invited to me to sample the trendy BlinkBar on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood. The dedicated lash extension shop opened in October 2015 and has gained quite a following evinced by the number of women there yesterday having their lashes luster-ized in mink.
If you haven’t gone this super glamming route yet and would really like to skip one makeup step—applying mascara and all the smudging and running that comes with it—BlinkBar lashes are for you. They come in three different hairs: regular, silk and mink. I went for the mink and happy with my choice. But not to too thrilled to learn that I had to wait 48 hours before getting them wet ie: washing my face around the eye area, shampooing my hair, taking a steam or swimming and that to keep them lasting longer you need to go back at least every three weeks. They do say the lashes last two months when treated carefully.
So here’s what happens at BlinkBar when you have an appointment. You sit down and the amiable reception desk person offers Prosecco or water while you wait. Then your lash-applying technician escorts you to a room where you get supine on a table for about two hours while she, in my case Julia who was born in Siberia—painstakingly puts on one thread of hair after the next. You might feel a little burning sensation in the eyes as did I and you might have to excuse yourself to run to the bathroom, as did I (don’t drink too much water before your visit) but in all it’s pretty comfortable. Julia provides a mirror from time to time to check to be sure if the lashes look okay or you want them longer, thicker or shorter. It’s a precise process to be sure that costs from $150 to $380 for full sets and of course less if you just want a few strands placed here and there. There are memberships available with reduced rates.
The results are utra-glam especially when you put on makeup and eyeliner. It is requested that women do not wear foundation or anything around the eyes to their appointment. The technique is done with special European lash technique from 300 different types of eyelashes.
BlinkBar is located at 7314 Melrose Avenue and in Santa Monica at 1706 Ocean Park Blvd., 310-948-2235.
