The Brevard County Manatees will have a new, but familiar face in the position of General Manager when the season starts in April. The team announced via press release Friday that Chad Lovitt will be promoted to the position and former General Manager Kyle Smith will step down after eight years with the Manatees.
“While we were sad to see Kyle Smith depart for a great opportunity, we are delighted to have current Assistant GM Chad Lovitt assume the role of Manatees General Manager,” said Manatees President Charlie Baumann said in the press release. “Chad has been with the organization for several years and is ready to assume the lead role and the responsibilities that go with it.”
“I am excited to accept the General Manager’s role with the Brevard County Manatees.” Lovitt said, “Since I arrived with the Manatees I have seen the hard work that Kyle has put in as General Manager. I look forward to building on his success. Our fans deserve first class promotions and affordable family fun and that is what we will provide. Fans can expect a few new promotions this upcoming season. April 8 cannot get here soon enough so we can get started”.
Smith will remain in the area, but has accepted another job outside of the organization. He will help Lovitt in what should be a smooth transition. “Chad is a rising star in sports executive circles and will lead the Sea Cows into a very successful 2016.” Smith said, “I’m incredibly proud to have had him as my Assistant GM and couldn’t be happier for him.”
Smith also thanked the Manatees for their support in his time with the club. “I will be forever thankful to the Manatees ownership and fans for their support over the last eight seasons.” Smith said, “I could not have asked to be surrounded by better people than I have had at Space Coast Stadium. Even though I was born and raised in Minnesota, Brevard County is home to the Smith Family.”
Lovitt has worked his way up the ladder quickly with the Manatees. He a Box Office Assistant in 2011 and returned to the Manatees as a full-time member of the staff and Director of Ticket Sales in January 2012. After the season in October of that year, he was promoted to Assistant General Manager.
This is the second big staff change ahead of the 2016 season. Media Director Dave Walkovic stepped down earlier this offseason, accepting a position with the United Soccer League’s Louisville City FC. We wish both Smith and Walkovic the best of luck in their new endeavors.
The ‘Tees will open their season on the road, April 7 against the Daytona Tortugas before the two teams meet again April 8 when the Manatees open their home schedule at Space Coast Stadium.
