When we were thinking about tying our “luxury travel” coverage into this centennial year for the National Parks Service, I had to scratch my head – but not for long. When the review copy arrived of the beautifully present 59 Illustrated National Parks by Joel Anderson and Nathan Anderson, I opened it at random and landed on page 66: Great Smoky Mountains – America’s Most Visited National Park.
We immediately reminisced over our wonderful stay at The Swag which borders this parkland and which is definitely rustic luxury. It has a one-mile frontage on the boundary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with access to the Park’s 800 miles of trails right through a split-rail fence. Innkeepers Dan and Deener Matthews treat you like family. The Swag, which reopens for the season April 22, encompasses 250 acres, including a 2.5-mile groomed hiking trail. Each guest receives a hand-made hiking stick. The Swag augments its natural setting with complimentary special event leaders who are experts in hiking, birding and wildflowers. See the schedule of those events here. Room rates at The Swag are double occupancy and include three gourmet meals daily. For more information visit www.theswag.com.
Sitting back in one of the luxe Swag cabins would be a great spot to peruse any of the three National Parks books that recently arrived in our in box for review. The other books that recently arrived are from a source known for photography: National Geographic, which is in fact is one of the founding patrons of the National Parks Service, National Geographic has been a huge supporter of the NPS from the very beginning. Next in this series, we’ll take a look at The National Geographic Kids National Parks Guide U.S.A. Centennial Edition.
First, the Anderson Design Group is celebrating the 100th anniversary with release of its 160-page, coffee table book 59 Illustrated National Parks, Celebrating 100 Years of Wilderness and Wonder. Written by Joel Anderson and his son, Nathan Anderson, the book features original poster illustrations, photography, facts and stories about our great American wilderness parks and the people who protect and preserve them.
The United States has 59 protected areas known as national parks, which are operated by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior. This is the first book to illustrate all 59 parks in one collection.
The Organic Act of 1916 created the National Park Service “to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” Twenty-seven states have national parks, as do the territories of American Samoa and the United States Virgin Islands and we just visited one in San Juan, Puerto Rico. California has the most (nine), followed by Alaska (eight), Utah (five),and Colorado (four).
59 Illustrated National Parks includes 71 full color posters from the Anderson Design Group’s award winning Art & Soul Collection, including 12 original oil paintings of national parks by Kai Carpenter. The book also includes beautiful wildlife and scenic photos of each park, along with stats, travel tips, an illustrated map of the United States showing where each park is located, an historic overview of the National Park Service, and historic facts about all 59 wilderness parks in the National Park System.
“Anderson Design Group has been working for five years to create a complete collection of prints that features all 59 national parks. We have produced an award-winning series of poster art rendered in the tradition of the classic WPA (Work Projects Administration) prints from the 1920s and 1930s,” said Joel Anderson. “This book is a tour of our national parks as seen through the eyes of poster artists. Our art is an invitation to experience the adventure, awe and splendor of these parks. Hopefully it will inspire everyone to visit our nation’s national parks.”
