Friday’s La Liga MX results were not what people were expecting to see in week 6 action of the Clausura 2016. Club America, currently in a top spot on the league table played to a 1-1 against bottom dweller Veracruz FC at the Luis “Pirata” Fuente Stadium. Atlas FC ruined the festivities for Toluca FC as the chorizeros were celebrating their 99th Anniversary. And finally, CF Monterrey managed an away victory against Club Santos Laguna 2-1 at the TSM Corona Stadium in Torreon, Mexico.
An overconfident America team visited the port city of Veracruz with the intent of doing a number on the Red Sharks. However, former America superstar and Veracruz Coach Carlos Reinoso had a different idea. The eagles sent out a strong attack, but Reinoso’s men were able to hold the 12 times Mexican League champions.
Argentine Rubens Sambueza put the ball in the net for the eagles in the first half. After that, the America attack could not get past the Veracruz defense, despite having more attackers.
Edgar Andrade put the ball in the net for the Tiburones Rojos in the second half, closing the gap. To add insult to injury, the locals lost a man due to a red card, leaving America with a numerical superiority on the pitch. Veracruz managed to hold on and earn a badly needed point.
Sour Anniversary for Toluca
Toluca FC hit the pitch of the Nemesio Diez Stadium with the intent of celebrating a home victory to celebrate 99 years of existence. But the zorros were not going to allow that, earning a 1-1 draw for their cause.
Argentine Enrique Triverio put the ball in the net for Toluca in the 64th minute. But the celebration did not last long as newcomer Jefferson Duque made his debut in La Liga MX scoring the equalizer. The Colombian is on-loan from his native country’s Atletico Nacional. The game concluded with the 1-1.
Monterrey continues at the top
CF Monterrey defeated Club Santos Laguna 2-1 at the TSM Corona Stadium and continue at the top of the league table. With 15 points to their name, the northern Mexico squad will remain at the top of the league table regardless of what any other squad does during the rest of week 6.
Santos lost their undefeated streak at home this season with the loss. Cape Verde player Djaniny Tavares scored the only goal for the home side. But not before the Colombian duo of Dorlan Pabón and Edwin Cardona did what Monterrey needed to remain at the top of the league table.
