La maquina cementera Cruz Azul destroyed CF Monterrey 4-0 at the Azul Stadium in Mexico City to kick off Saturday action in week 8 of the Clausura 2016 of La Liga MX. The Azulinos maintain a 10 year undefeated streak at home against the Rayados.
From the start the home side took possession of the ball and managed the time on the pitch. Cruz Azul has been taking large steps recently, and moving into playoff positions. The victory left Cruz Azul with 13 points.
Three headers in the area gave Cruz Azul the 1-0 in the 10th minute. On a corner kick, Omar Mendoza was the third player to connect with his head to volley the ball over goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco who jumped but could do nothing to prevent the ball from entering the top near corner of his net.
Cruz Azul maintained their dominance over the current league leader and broke the net once more in the 29th minute. Spaniard Victor Vasquez filtered the ball to Paraguayan Jorge Benitez who was inbound down the center pitch. Benitez beat out the defender to face Orozco one-on-one. Benitez fired to Orozco’s right for the 2-0.
It appeared that Cruz Azul would score a third goal when defender Rogelio Funes Mori was called for a hand in the area during a free kick. The Argentine extended his arm and changed the ball’s direction when he was part of the defensive wall. Ecuadorian Joffre Guerron would make the attempt to convert but fired slowly to Orozco’s left. The keeper kept the ball from entering his net.
The Azulinos made up for the missed opportunity in the 34th when Ecuadorian Joao Rojas filtered the ball past the defense, this time from the opposite side of the field to Benitez. “El Conejo” was once more inbound from the center. With Orozco off his line, Benitez simply moved around the keeper and shot to the unguarded net for the 3-0.
The game intensified in the second half with Monterrey looking to close the distance. But a cool and relaxed maquina cementera controlled the tempo keeping their adversary in check.
On a counterstrike, Christian “Chaco” Gimenez added the fourth goal of the game. On a center from Rojas, the Argentine-Mexican dove and headed the ball past the keeper for the 4-0. Gimenez had been on the field for less than a minute.
The home side lost top scorer Benitez to a red card in the 89th minute. Cruz Azul will face crosstown rivals Pumas UNAM in week 9 without their leading goal scorer.
Cruz Azul moved into the 4th position, awaiting the results of the rest of the week’s action. Monterrey on the other hand, will remain with 18 points and could lose the top spot to Leon FC if La Fiera defeats bottom dweller Chiapas FC.
