This year, 2016, has 366 days instead of 365; therefore, it is a Leap Year. The extra day is a Leap Day; it is Feb. 29. On Feb. 28, Leap Day Eve, warm temperatures brought out Chicago-land golfers.
On Feb. 28, some areas of Chicago-land had 60 degree temperatures. During the day and at night, clouds covered most of the sky. Occasionally, there were wind gusts of about 20 mph.
Of Forest Preserve’s, 10 golf courses, Billy Caldwell Golf Course, Chick Evans Golf Course, George Dunne National Golf Course, Highland Woods Golf Course, Indian Boundary Golf Course, Meadowlark Golf Course and River Oaks Golf Course were open. (These were also open on Feb. 27, which was another warm day with temperatures in the mid-50s.) The Harry Semrow Driving Range in Des Plaines, Ill. was closed.
Of the Chicago Park District’s, six golf courses, only Jackson Park Golf Course and Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course were open. (These were also open on Feb. 27.) The Diversey Range is open throughout the year.
Jackson Park Golf Course has South Stoney Island Avenue as its western boundary, East 63rd Street and South Richards Drive as its northern boundary, East 67th Street as its southern boundary and South Lake Shore Drive as its easternmost boundary. Such an area qualifies this course as the largest one among the Chicago Park District courses. Indeed, Jackson (the park which includes the golf course) may be larger than Washington Park, which does not have a golf course.
Jackson Park Golf Course us an 18 holes course with an average of 2,746 yards on the front nine and 2,762 yards on the back nine from the Blue teeing grounds; the total is 5,508. From the Red teeing ground, the front nine has 2,927 yards and the back nine has 2,680 yards; the total is 5,307.
On Leap Day Eve at Jackson Park Golf Course, a huge, broken, tree branch lay on the grass in the area along the trail leading to the seventh hole’s teeing grounds. (It has likely been there since Feb. 20 when strong winds toppled it.) This branch is somewhat near the 14th hole’s teeing grounds; however normally, this object should not interfere with golfers.
According to weather forecasts, Leap Day in Chicago will be slightly cooler than Leap Day Eve was. Temperatures are supposed to be in the low 50s. If you play golf on Leap Day and score an eagle, leap into the air, and have someone photograph your leap. You will not have such a double-leap opportunity until Feb. 29, 2020.
