Lauren Conrad went on task today that she is joining the Oceana campaign to protect sea turtles against extinction in its southeast shrimp trawl fishery. Lauren stars in Oceana’s public service announcement where Lauren is joined by newly-hatched sea turtles which Oceana released today so everyone can see Lauren’s message.
Lauren says she feels so lucky that she had the chance to witness the hatching of the sea turtles, and that these incredible animals deserve our protection and respect. Lauren also mentions it’s encouraging to know that a simple policy change could save thousands of sea turtles every year, and wants everyone to visit oceana.org/SaveSeaTurtles and take action today.
Oceana is seeking a requirement for all shrimp trawlers in the southeast shrimp trawl fishery to use Turtle Excluder Devices that are specialized metal grates inserted in trawl nets allowing captured sea turtles to escape. Oceana also encourages next generation sea turtle lovers to write to President Obama and Secretary Penny Pritzker expressing their love for sea turtles while justifying their protection, and letters will be presented the U.S. Government on World Sea Turtle Day on June 16, 2016.
Lauren went on location to the Rancho Nuevo Sea Turtle Sanctuary in Tamaulipas, Mexico last June to shoot the PSA and witness a mass amount of sea turtles being hatched. Rancho Nuevo nests 95 percent of the world’s Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles happening in spring and early summer, and are the smallest and most endangered species of sea turtle.
Oceana also worked with Mexico’s National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) to patrol beaches for nesting turtles and release hatchings into the Gulf of Mexico. From there, 97,000 Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles emerged from more than 2,000 nests during CONANP’s monitored incubation as CONANP collaborates with the Gladys Porter Zoo in a bi-national program between Mexico and the United States.
Along with Lauren Conrad’s good work to protect sea turtles, Lauren maintains LaurenConrad.com on a daily basis where she started a new series today called This Season’s Staples. Inaugurating this new piece is the turtleneck sweater where Lauren emphasizes that one take their favorite staple piece that sticks around no matter the season and update it every now and then.
