On Thursday night, Feb. 25, 2016, in front of a sellout crowd of 18,230 at STAPLES Center in downtown Los Angeles, The LA Kings scored twice in the third period and went on to beat the Edmonton Oilers by a final score of 2-1. For the Kings, this was their third straight win, and the fourth straight game in which the final score was 2-1.
The Kings seemed to have trouble with the overall team speed of the Oilers, but eventually were able to prevail. They fell behind 1-0 when Zack Kassian scored the first goal of the game, with just over one minute remaining in the second period. The Kings outshot the visiting team 21-18 over the course of the first two periods, but were never able to find a good rhythm.
In the third period, thanks to two players breaking out of goal-scoring droughts, the Kings prevailed. At 5:27, Jeff Carter poked home a rebound, thus breaking a seven-game goal-scoring drought. Carter had last scored on Feb. 9 when the team blew out Boston by a score of 9-2. His linemates Tyler Toffoli and Dwight King, drew the assists. Later in the period, Carter returned the favor.
Like Carter, Dwight King had not scored since the epic win over Boston. That changed with less than six minutes left to play, when King tipped in what proved to game-winning goal. Assists went to linemates Carter and Tyler Toffoli. The Kings outshot the Oilers 15-9 in the third period, ultimately sending the frustrated bunch from Western Canada, to a fifth straight loss.
Kings notes – Though they have won three straight, the Kings have scored just eight goals in the last six games. With 76 points, they remain in first place in the Pacific division, four points ahead of the Anaheim Ducks and six points ahead of the San Jose Sharks, though both teams have a game in hand. The Kings will next face the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night at STAPLES Center, before heading to Anaheim to faceoff against the Ducks on Sunday, Feb 28.
