Kyle Richards says her relationship with her long-estranged sister Kim Richards is getting better, and she credits their Bravo reality show for forcing her sister to face her issues and get help. In an interview with People posted on Dec. 9, the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star said her sister is doing well after getting out of rehab for alcoholism. “I spoke to Kim the other day and she was confident and strong,” Kyle told the magazine. “I was like, ‘Yes! Let’s keep you here.’ There are no guarantees, but I’m excited and hopeful. I just hope Kim will be healthy, happy and sober for the rest of her life.”
In the interview, Kyle also revealed that when she was growing up, she idolized her child star sister, despite the fact that they would sometimes have some wicked fights. “I thought she was so magical,” she said. “But on the other side of that, we would fight. Kim would scratch me until she drew blood and I’d bite her and leave marks. I thought it was normal!”
Kim Richards’ alcohol abuse played out during the first season of “RHOBH,” and it has been an ongoing storyline on the show ever since. While Kyle said she initially tried to protect her sister and keep her issues private, the first season of the Bravo reality show turned out to be a real eye opener. Kyle also admitted that she used to be “very angry” at Kim and her issues, but now she realizes that alcoholism is a disease and her sister can’t help it.
Kyle Richards was estranged from her sister for nearly a year. In April, Kim was arrested for public intoxication after an incident at the Beverly Hills Hotel. But according to Kyle, her big sis has her life back on track. In fact, while it was previously announced that Kim would sit out this season of “RHOBH” to focus on her sobriety, Kyle told TMZ she thinks the show forced Kim to get help and is also the best way to help her sister avoid falling off the wagon. “In a lot of ways, this show has saved Kim,” Kyle said.
