This is a huge change compared to last year. Therefore, we hope that next year will be even more than this year. With these results, it means that this is a very big movement within the Korean contents movement. Thus, we believe that it does not only stay in Korea, but will go out overseas as well,” stated KWEBFEST Founder, Young Man Kang, said: “Right now, KPOP has been very popular. Next time is going to be KWEB, Korean web series. KPOP has been very popular. I think we have a chance to have web series with big potential as popular as KPOP because Korean artists have a lot of talent, so we are able to make good storytelling through web series, and the variety of storytelling. Especially because Korean hardware (like smartphones) are popular all over the world; with hardware and web series software; to put it together will make a very strong business model.”
According to Kang, “This is a world trend because every country has the number of smartphone users increasing. At the same time, they need content to watch through the smartphone. Also, the smartphone, the technique of it, the speed, is getting faster. So that is why they are able to watch clear images without lagging. The Korean web series industry within a few years, 4 or 5 times increased in production and the view count increased 6 or 7 times within those few years. Also, more MCN (Multi Channel Network) companies have been started up. TV companies used to discover stars now move from major to IPTV (internet cable or internet TV). Now, in the US, about 100 MCN companies have started up. In Europe, there are web series distribution companies that focus mainly on web series. Even webfests; new webfests started up every year. Now, there are about 40 webfests in the world.
LA WEBFEST started in 2010, Marseille WEBFEST started in 2011, after that, Melbourne and Roma WEBFEET. There are now 40 around the world, but in Asia, there is only KWEBFEST.
The first edition, KWEBFEST was launched in July 30-31, 2015 building a partnership with webfests from 13 countries all over the world. After the KWEBFEST event, Kang, has continued to travel across the globe to create partnerships.
“Everything is for KWEBFEST’s future to make a better KWEBFEST,” stated Kang.
