Today Kristin Ahmer, CEO and founder of The Original Squeeze Company, is a healthy, happy mother of two but her inspiring story journey of becoming an entrepreneur is nothing short of remarkable.
No one would ever guess from looking at her, that in 2010 after giving birth to her first child, Will, Kristin survived a near fatal brain bleed. After 17 days in the ICU, unsure of her survival, doctors surgically removed a mass on her brain that was found to be an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Occurring in less than 1 percent of the population, AVMs lead to death in 10-15% of patients and permanent brain damage in 25-50% of patients. Grateful to survive without permanent brain damage, Kristin vowed from that point on to focus on all that was good in her life and cherish her moments as a stay at home mom.
As many moms at home with babies and kids, Kristin often pondered ways to make life as a parent easier. When Will was 10 months old, Kristin’s mission was to get out of the house on time with a healthy portable snack for Will. Her mission failed, however, as Will’s disposable food pouch explode all over him, the car and herself, creating a sticky mess.
That’s when Ahmer’s entrepreneurial instincts kicked in. She knew there had to be a better, easier solution for healthy, spill-proof snacking. That night she began her research and found that there was nothing available on the market.
Eighteen months later in 2011, Kristin launched her invention, The Original Squeeze, the first ever reusable food pouch with a patented spill-proof spout that allows kids as young as 6 months to enjoy mess-free pureed food, yogurt, applesauce and more while on the go. Made of certified food-safe materials that are BPA, phthalate and PVC- free, it is also easy to clean, top-rack dishwasher friendly and freezer-safe.
The initial success of Kristin’s products came through word of mouth and grassroots efforts with independent retailers. Since 2011, Kristin has moved her company headquarters to Post Falls, Idaho and expanded the product line to also offer free-flowing reusable pouch options with the Original Squeeze with Eeeze and the new Sport Squeeze. The Original Squeeze with Eeeze™ has a free-flowing nipple spout and is recommended for children 2 years and up, making it the perfect fit for the child that has graduated from bottles to sippy cups and straws. The new Sport Squeeze® is Kristin’s first all-ages reusable squeeze pouch invention, with the athlete and adventurer in mind. It features a larger 8oz size that is perfect for homemade power gels, smoothies and protein shakes. Available in variety of colors and sizes, The Original Squeeze products retail for $13.99-$15.99 and are sold online, in independent retailers, at H-E-B grocery stores and currently distributed in 8 countries world-wide. Even more expansion is on the horizon for 2016 with nationwide launches into big box retailers including Babies “R” Us, BuyBuy Baby and Costco stores.
“Squeezing the goodness out of what we are given” is the both Kristin’s personal mantra and The Original Squeeze Company’s philosophy. Hopefully, Kristin and her company will inspire others to do the same. For more information on Kristin Ahmer and The Original Squeeze Company visit, www.OriginalSqueeze.com.
