Klingon wedding would be a sight to see, and attendees at this year’s StarFest convention got the chance to witness the event. Jason and Donna Hale of Denver, CO got “married” again, and this time they did it in Klingon style at the Denver Crowne Plaza Hotel this past Mar. 11-13, 2016. Always a big part of StarFest’s annual convention, KingonFest brings the entertainment for all ages. I chatted with Donna Hale about the cool experience.
Colleen Bement: Who came up with the idea of having a Klingon wedding at StarFest, and how much research had to be done to get it right?
Donna Hale: We have been going back through some of our older Sci-Fi shows and had just finished ‘Star Trek:DS9’ and Jason thought that Quark, his favorite character, would be an awesome Cosplay for StarFest. We always try to have couple themes and one of our favorite episodes was “The House of Quark.” So Grilka was a perfect opportunity to do the Klingon-Ferengi relationship. Then as the year preparing went on and we went to StarFest in our new creations, we started talking how great it would be to actually do a Klingon-Ferengi wedding. We asked Richard, one of our friends in the Klingon group if we did a wedding scene, could we then be part of his Klingon house; even if Jason was not a Klingon.
CB: How did you create your costumes?
DH: We searched for fabric from Denver to Colorado Springs for Jason’s Quark outfit. Once we found what we were looking for it took about 2 months to design and finish his vest and jacket. I found the fabric for my Klingon outfit at the thrift store and designed my outfit which took about a month. Our good friends Dave and Maria created our head pieces with the help of their daughter who sculpted the Ferengi head.
CB: Being married in reality, what was it like for you to take part in a Klingon wedding ceremony?
DH: It was so much bigger than we expected. We originally thought we would have the ceremony in our room but after speaking the John (head of the Klingon room) he rearranged the schedule and worked with the rest of the Klingons to help us celebrate. It was awesome to be able to renew our vows doing something we both enjoy and celebrate with others that enjoy cosplay as well.
We would like to thank John, Peter as well as all the Klingons. We would like to thank Richard for performing the ceremony, Sean Caspian for filming and our family and friends that made it all possible. You can watch the Klingon-Ferengi wedding on You Tube under Sean Caspian.
