Kleanbowl is a no-wash pet food bowl which uses eco-friendly, compostable food/water holders (inserts) which are disposed of after each use. The Kleanbowl is composed of a stainless steel holder which secures a disposable, compostable inner bowl in such a way that it prevents most pets from removing, eating, spilling or damaging the bowl itself (more on that later in this review!). The Kleanbowl comes with 7 refill bowls; packs of 50 replacement bowls are available. The metal holder has a non-skid base to reduce the movement of the bowl across the floor (more on that later as well!).
Raw food and canned food can leave behind bacteria and mold if the bowl is not cleaned thoroughly. Water bowls can build up a slimy residue in 24 hours or less despite thorough daily scrubbings. With the Kleanbowl, there is no need to scrub the bowl or put it in the dishwasher; this saves the owner time, water and energy. The disposable replacement bowls come in three sizes and there are optional lids available which allow for storing food in fridge/freezer/cooler and for use in the microwave or while traveling. The bowls are microwave and freezer safe, and oil and cut resistant.
Author’s review: having only vegetarian pets who eat mainly dry food pellets and hay, bacteria and mold left behind in a food dish are not so much of a problem, but water bowls obviously need regular scrubbing. In addition, two bunnies regularly dump their bowls of dry food pellets on the floor in order to more easily select the ones they wish to eat first. One of those two bunnies will also dump over his water bowl. No reason.
I first tried the Kleanbowl on the water-bowl-dumper, wisely filling it with food pellets instead of water for this test. At the end of the day, the bunny (Lord Grantham) was unable to flip the bowl. I bravely tried filling the insert with water, and while Lord Grantham was able to slosh a bit of water over the side of the bowl after spending several hours working at it, he was unable to dump over the Kleanbowl!
The second bunny not only flips his food bowls, but enjoys shoving them all around the kitchen. You never know where the food bowl will end up. I again filled a Kleanbowl liner with food and set it out for Elliot. The food bowl not only remained right-side-up, but remained where I’d placed it!
I bravely filled a liner with water and left it, unsupervised, with Elliot. Returning hours later, the bowl was right where I’d placed it and had not been overturned. A week later, Elliot no longer even bothers to try flipping/shoving the Kleanbowl.
If I could give the Kleanbowl 5 stars, I would…and in all fairness, the bowl-flipping rabbit is a rather unusual case. He worked all day in order to manage to shove the bowl with enough force to slosh some water over the side. Quite honestly the Kleanbowl is a great source of entertainment for him when I fill it with hay or some other non-messy food; it gives him something fun to do while I am away (working at trying to dump over the bowl) and he frequently takes breaks to enjoy a tasty snack from the bowl!
