A 26-year-old woman was in a California courtroom on February 17 describing the events that led up to her being raped when she was 15 and then held captive for the next ten years during which time she was forced to marry her abductor and bear his child. The unidentified female was in Orange County testifying in the case against Isidro Garcia, 42, her alleged rapist and kidnapper, according to a February 18 report from the Associated Press shared by Yahoo! News.
The Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) released a statement on May 21, 2014 saying that after 10 years, they located a woman who had been kidnapped in 2004. The young victim was abducted by her mother’s boyfriend, Isidro Garcia, who “frequently physically and sexually assaulted the victim” during the 10 years she was held captive, according to police.
The victim was first reported missing from Santa Ana, California, in August 2004 when she was only 15 years old. At the time, her kidnapper was living with the victim’s mother. According to the release from the SAPD, although the mother couldn’t prove it, she suspected that her boyfriend had been sexually abusing her teen daughter.
The now freed victim told police that Garcia started raping her in her mother’s home beginning in June 2004. The woman testified in court yesterday that the first time she was raped, “Garcia took off their clothes and grabbed her and threw her on the bed. She told him she didn’t want to, but he continued, she said,” according to Yahoo!
The alleged victim then told the court that Garcia ordered her to take a shower and wash the bloody bed sheets. The woman said that Garcia had sex with her at least six times before he spirited her away from her mother’s Santa Ana apartment.
Police said that in August 2004, Garcia assaulted the victim’s mother, drugged the 15-year-old daughter and drove her to a house in Compton where he falsified documents as to his victim’s identity and kept her locked up in a garage.
In the months and years to follow, Garcia told the victim that her family had stopped searching for her, and “if she tried to go back to them, the family would be deported,” according to the police statement. Garcia secured employment for himself and his victim so that they could work together for a night cleaning service so he could keep a close eye on her.
Even with the opportunity to escape, after years of physical and mental abuse, the victim saw no way out of her situation and lived a life with Garcia under sustained physical and mental abuse. In 2007, Garcia forced the victim into a marriage and in 2012 the two had a child. ~ per SAPD
In 2014, the victim managed to reach out to her sister via Facebook. After a while, she drummed up the courage to contact the police, according to Fox News.
Garcia was arrested in May 2014 and booked on charges of kidnap for rape, lewd act with a minor and false imprisonment. If found guilty on the kidnapping charge alone, Garcia could be looking at life behind bars. Garcia has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
