Manga publisher Digital Manga Inc. kicked off its latest crowdfunding campaign today, this time for something other than an Osamu Tezuka manga release, a new print and digital release of the classic shonen manga series, “Kimagure Orange Road.”
The series is written and illustrated by Izumi Matsumoto, and follows the story of Kyosuke Kasuga, an indecisive high school student, gifted with ESP. That doesn’t make his life any easier however, as Kyosuke still manages to find himself caught in a love triangle with the tough and introverted Madoka Ayukawa, and the happy go-lucky Hikaru Hiyama, two girls who also happen to be best friends. The 1980s manga series ran a total of eighteen volumes, and was rescued when Digital Manga picked up the series in 2014, releasing the manga digitally through its ebook platform, eManga.com.
The newly launched Kickstarter campaign will run for 40-days, and is intended to help Digital Manga re-release the manga series, in 5-1/8” x 7-3/16”, antique natural paper stock, print omnibus volumes, with each volume containing over 550-pages, and including three volumes from the original Japanese editions. The campaign has an initial goal of $34,900, to release the first omnibus volume in print, with stretch goals (vol. 2 at $56,900; vol. 3 at $74,900; vol. 4 at $89,900; vol. 5 at $105,900; and vol. 6 at $119,900) unlocking the next volumes as add-ons.
The campaign ends on May 10, 2016, and backer tiers range from $1 digital wallpapers, to one very impressive $1,500 reward, with unique one-of-a-kind collector’s items, some signed by Izumi Matsumoto himself. The reward tiers that will get you the first volume omnibus in print, start at $30, while you can get a digital version at $15. Should the campaign succeed, the first volume is expected to ship later this year. At the time of this post, 58 backers have already helped to raise $6,201.
