On Jan. 15 the Fox Sports site reported that Kentucky has looked much better on defense since suffering a loss at LSU 85-67 just three games ago. In their most recent outings, they were able to win 77-61 over Alabama with 34.6 percent field goal shooting. Then, this past Tuesday, the Wildcats held the Mississippi State Bulldogs to just 37 points total in the first 21:34 of the game. Unfortunately, Kentucky’s defense gave up the same number of points over the final 9:26 of the game and allowed 52.9 percent shooting on their home court. John Calipari will hope for a combination of that first 21 minutes of defense from the Bulldogs game as well as limiting today’s opponents to low field goal shooting like they did to Alabama. A complete game will certainly give this team a building block and momentum towards the tournament.
Today they’ll face a 7-8 Auburn Tigers team that is led by junior guard Kareem Canty. He’s been averaging 18.5 points and nearly six assists a game this season to lead the team. Tyler Harris is averaging 14.9 points and 8.4 rebounds, with Cinmeon Bowers adding another 11.2 points per game and snatching nearly nine rebounds to help out. The Tigers are losers of three-straight games now, including a 75-57 rout at Vanderbilt this past Tuesday, and a 76-61 loss at Missouri a week ago. The Tigers’ last win came exactly two weeks ago, by a final of 83-77 over Tennessee with Bryce Brown and Canty each scoring 20 points to lead the way. Auburn will need to pick up some quality wins at 7-8, as they’ve already fallen to both ranked opponents (South Carolina, Xavier) they’ve faced this season.
