Kelly Ripa was a no-show on “Live! With Kelly and Michael” today after she was blindsided by the news that Michael has taken a full-time gig on “GMA.” Ripa was hurt and humiliated and many would say she had a right to be after the way she found out about the news, with not so much as a heads up from anyone, including her co-host.
According to MSN News on April 20, Kelly and the show’s executive producer, Michael Gelman were stunned when Michael told them he would be leaving. He told them just before announcing the news to the public. They were stunned because they had no idea Michael was even thinking about leaving or that he had been in negotiations around the GMA spot.
Kelly was not only stunned, but she was “upset” when Michael told her the news. This must have been confusing for Kelly because it was only about two months ago that Michael raved about the show and especially about working with his co-host Kelly.
According to MSN, “an insider suggests that her absence may be a sign of things to come, and she may not show for the foreseeable future.” This seems to indicate that Kelly was profoundly upset over Michael’s departure news, or maybe the late delivery of that news is a more accurate description.
Fox News reports that Kelly felt “disrespected” by Michael, who is already a part-timer at GMA. He should have shared this news with her early on, which would have been what most co-hosts would have expected. Fox reports that Michael’s gushing about Kelly back in February seemed to indicate he was quite happy with the way things were.
In the ET video above, Anderson Cooper and Neil Patrick Harris are the rumored short list considered as a replacement for Michael. The video also offers the clip of Michael’s words of praise to Kelly that he said on air in hopes that she was tuning in today.
Besides being friends and co-workers with Michael, “Live” is Kelly’s paycheck and Michael has brought the ratings up. When he came aboard in 2012 to replace Regis Philbin, the ratings bounced up and the show is still enjoying a solid and steady viewership base.
Why is he leaving? Cate Meighan, who is considered an expert on pop culture, according to Fox, claims that this is a good move for Michael. She also offered some theories as to why Michael may be moving on. Meighan said:
“After spending four years on ‘Live’ he may just be excited at the idea of being able to tell a different kind of story. My guess is that the dollar signs that go with his new full time position at ‘GMA’ only sweetened the deal. If you look at Strahan’s career in broadcasting he likes to keep moving and challenging himself, this may simply be another example of that.”
While Meighan is confident that this is the right thing for Michael to do, the social media users are confused over Michael’s pending departure. Michael announced to the fans on the show today that he is leaving “Live” for a full-time gig at “GMA” in September.
