Is that it – Kelly Ripa just needed a few days to “process” things and she’s headed back to work as if nothing happened on Tuesday? Folks behind the scenes are a bit worried that if Kelly does return to work as scheduled on Tuesday, that she may go-off script and pull an “Ann Curry.”
Rumors have it that ABC is worried that Kelly will go rogue if she does return on Tuesday, according to Media Confidential on April 23. Kelly will have live TV as her canvas, so if she wants to paint a picture that’s the place to do it. ABC has created an awkward situation with Kelly now feeling overshadowed by Michael and they expect the two to sit side-by-side for the next four months with this friction? What are they thinking? Will Kelly be able to work with Michael under these conditions and make it look like nothing at all is bothering her?
Besides being left out of the loop that Michael was going through negotiations and finally decided on jumping ship to “GMA,” Kelly also feels that “GMA” is more important to ABC than “Live” is, as “GMA” is getting the preferential treatment. She is apparently not feeling very confident in ABC’s intentions these days.
Kelly has not taken any of Michael Strahan’s calls and she hasn’t picked up the phone for any of the ABC head honchos since skipping out on “Live” last Wednesday. Kelly learned just before the press release went out that her co-host’s part-time gig at “GMA” was turning into a full-time gig and he was announcing his exit from “Live.” Blindsided, furious and a bit embarrassed Kelly was a no-show on Wednesday’s “Live,” which started the wheels spinning in the Kelly and Michael saga. Thursday Ripa was not on the show and then Friday it was a scheduled day off for Kelly, as is this Monday.
She had previously scheduled Friday and Monday off long before things blew up over at “Live with Kelly and Michael,” so her next scheduled day to work is Tuesday. Vanity Fair reports that Kelly sent an email to the powers who be over at ABC announcing she would return to “Live” on Tuesday. Her brief email said:
“(Sorry for this late Friday night email). I wanted to thank you all for giving me the time to process this new information. Your kindness, support, and love has overwhelmed me. We are a family and I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday morning. Love, Kelly.”
Deadline suggests that Kelly took the spotlight right off of Michael with her MIA routine. They suggest she may have moved it up a level and did this better than Ann Curry. They are referring to how Curry went off script revealing her departure in her own way by telling her viewers it was her last day, but it was not how she imagined leaving the show. The tears flowed and when Matt Lauer moved in to give Curry a kiss on the cheek, she flinched back and he ended up planting one on the top of her head. It was a visual that said it all.
