In Kansas City, Kansas, Michael, 44 and Heather Jones, 29, parents of Adrian Jones, 7, have been charged in connection of his murder and fake kidnapping. Michael is the child’s biological father and Heather is the stepmother. The child, who was reported missing months ago is now presumed dead by police. They have been charged with 1st Degree Murder. District Attorney, Chris Schneider announced the charges on Friday, Heather has been charged with murder and child abuse and is being held at the Wyandotte County Jail on a 5 million dollar bond. Michael has been charged with murder and aggravated assault and aggravated battery, His bond is set at 10 million dollars. It is safe to say that both of them will be remanded in jail awaiting trial. Heather Jones was arrested following a felony shoplifting charge at Walmart.
Reportedly, the police were called to the Jones’ residence in the 5200 block of North 99th on the day before Thanksgiving for a Domestic Dispute. Apparently, Michael was shooting a gun at Heather. A search of the farm grounds led to a barn where police discovered the remains of a decomposed body believed to be Adrian Jones. In the Jones’ defense, Adrian has been missing since late September 2015 but they never reported him missing. A preliminary investigation led police to believe that Adrian’s body was fed to pigs after he was beaten to death. At this time, the murder charges are based on the fact that the bones of the body are that of a child but are inconclusive at this time whether they belong to Adrian.
There have been witness accounts by previous employees on the farm that Heather Jones was a battered wife who was fearful that Michael would kill her if she tried to leave him and Heather Jones’ defense attorney believes that he can get the charges dismissed against her. In my expert opinion as a Criminologist who works with victims and survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, and intimate partner violence (IPV), it is true that victims can feel like they are stuck in the mud with nowhere to run but to stand by when a child is fed to pigs suggests that she had a hand in the attempted disposal of the child’s body.
I have studied cases where a child has died at the hands of one parent while the other is so battered that they too feel the same will be their demise if they seek help, but as a rule of thumb, they do not go to the extremes of ‘getting rid’ of a child’s body. There are just so much a person can hold back, Most parents will die to protect their child whether they are a biological or stepparent. I truly believe that she had a way out when the child died. She could have called the police and Michael would have been charged with murder and she would have had her way out. But, she did nothing and instead either stood by as Michael fed her stepson to pigs or she helped. Sadly, there have been other reports of murdering psychopaths feeding their victims to pigs to cover up their murders as well.
