An update to the Kalamazoo shooting in Michigan reports good news for worried residents since a suspect has been taken into custody. Kalamazoo County, Michigan, saw a series of random fatal shootings on Saturday during which a man drove around targeting innocent victims in various locations. Police have apprehended a man who they believe is responsible for the death of six innocent people, including an 8-year-old girl.
The suspect being held for the random Michigan shootings was taken into custody in the Central City area of downtown Kalamazoo, reports WWMT on Saturday, February 20. According to Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley, “a strong suspect” is in custody in this case.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office described the suspect as a white man in his 50s who had been driving a blue Chevy HHR. He is currently being interviewed by police detectives. Before the suspect was taken into custody, Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas had commented on a crazy man’s actions:
“What it looks like is we have someone just driving around, finding people and shooting them dead in their tracks.”
The apprehension of the man came after police interviewed witnesses to the Seelye shooting and examined a surveillance video. The Seelye shooting was the second of three shooting locations.
The first shooting was reported around 7:50 p.m. at the Meadows Townhomes parking lot in Richland Township. A woman, who was outside with her children, was shot four times. She is reportedly in serious condition.
The second shooting took place three hours later at the Seelye Kia dealership located at 3820 Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo. “At this point we believe [the two killed] were just here looking at a vehicle,” Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley said. A father and his son were killed at the dealership.
The thirds shooting occurred outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant just a few miles away from the Seelye dealership. Several people in different cars were shot at. In an updated report on Sunday morning, WWMT writes that Michigan State Police confirmed that “a fifth victim at the Cracker Barrel, in Texas Township, has died, bringing the death toll to 7.”
According to Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas, “the suspect got out of his car at the Cracker Barrell and had a brief conversation with people in two other cars before firing into both vehicles.”
A report of a fourth shooting, around 12:30 a.m. at OP Avenue and 6th Street in Texas Township, near the Cracker Barrel, but according to WWMT, the shooting was not related to the previous three. The three shootings in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, resulted in the death of six people, including a father, a son, and an 8-year-old girl.
