My love affair with Jules Hudson began about a year ago when I happened upon a YouTube video of Escape to the Country, a BBC television show that has various presenters taking would-be home shoppers around the United Kingdom in search of a more rural lifestyle and home.
At that time, Jules was just one of the small number of personalities being taped on these fun and informative excursions that included trips to the coastline, the moorlands, scenic rolling hill vistas and every kind of interesting landscape, garden and village dotting the English, Wales and Scottish countryside. Jules stood out, however, as it seemed he was always able to find just the right property for his potential buyers–and it seems he was always bringing the women to tears: of joy.
The show offers those in the States the opportunity to see and learn about a wide variety of the UK’s “areas of natural outstanding beauty” as they are fond of saying on the show, and it includes excursions to some of the cottage industries in the rural settings that set England apart, like the Dents glove shop in Warminster, where Jules was taping for a Wiltshire show on April 28, according to the Wiltshire Times. In that trip Jules will share with audiences the iconic gloves that Dents has made, like those that James Bond wore in Skyfall, the largest grossing Bond film of all time.
Radio Times reports on April 29 that this Wiltshire Escape to the Country episode will be the 53rd in the 16th series of the show’s history. That’s a lot of realty shopping and rural community visiting, but if you have watched the show you don’t have to be convinced about why it is popular: the show has the right music to soothe the jittery nerves of the fast-paced corporate worker at the end of the day; it offers outstanding views of the countryside, providing a mini vacation to the city dweller any time of the week, since you merely call up an episode at your leisure (for free) on YouTube; and, you get to view beautiful and quaint properties while watching other home buyers try to decide which of the three properties shown will work for them and theirs.
But that’s not all. Escape to the Country viewers also get to enjoy the charismatic and charming presenter Jules Hudson as he deftly seeks to deliver everything on his clients’ wish list, while oozing diplomacy to those who ask him for too much–or are too picky, and still maintaining a James Bond air of his own, despite any roadblocks he encounters along the way. Hudson has wit, good looks, and the kind of personality that no one can resist, but he also has that little bit more; as he comes across as very sincere and earnest in his interactions with all he meets. And you believe him.
And that’s why Jules Hudson puts women to sleep at night, as they tune into Escape over and over again just to hear him talking as they drift off to sleep, even if he made one of his female clients cry because he gave her everything she wished for in her new property. And it is a lovely thought to nod off to, as you might want to “be on a show” one day, too, and you know Jules will make sure your rural search is as perfect as the woman who went before you. And isn’t that a nice dream to have?
