Last night was the first night of live shows for American Idol. The night was filled with surprises, great judges and wonderful performances. Tonight was the Wildcard night, which proved to be a bit different this season. Instead of bringing a Idol hopeful back, the judges picked 4 semi finalist to advance to the Top 10. The four they had picked could sit out and enjoy the show, while the ten remaining contestants had to perform for America’s vote for the first time this season.
The four Idol hopefuls that judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick Jr agreed unanimously to advance to the top 10 are Dalton Rapattoni, Olivia Rox, Trent Harmon, and La’Porsha Renae. This leaves America to decide which six will advance, and who will go home. If you didn’t watch last night, don’t worry. Here’s a quick recap:
Manny Torres took the stage first, and we’re pleasantly surprised with how well he did. It wasn’t the best song choice or the greatest performance he’s ever done but it was fun to watch. “Master Blaster” is a vocally taxing song, and Torres surprisingly did a good job.
Gianna Isabella is next. She’s a favorite of Jen’s, and we can see why. She has a superstar mom, and she has nice pipes. But, the performance wasn’t anything to write home about. According to Jen, Gianna deserves to be in the top 10. We’ll let America decide that.
Following Isabella was Thomas Stringfellow taking the stage with One Directions, “Story of My Life.” It was a great song choice but Harry called him out on his hiccups that he does after every word. It’s hardly noticeable at times, but other times it’s obvious. He’s a great talent, and the performance was well overall. The younger ones will keep him around.
Tristan McIntosh was next. We’re in love with her and everything that she is about. She wants to make her mark in country music, which we see her doing really well. “What Hurts the Most” by Rascal Flatts is the song she decided to tackle, and it was a great performance for her. She has a big enough following that people will vote for her. We’re betting on her to take this competition to the next level.
Next up is the quirky but oh-so talented Avalon Young. Her voice is soulful, and she owned the stage. She’s a well rounded performer, and the tone in her voice is flawless. Young could have a great way of making this competition all about her. America will vote her in. Following Young was Jenn Blosil. Her performance of True Colors was rocky. She has a great vocal but doesn’t appear like she knows how to use it to her best potential. The talent is there but I see her getting lost in the competition.
Lee Jean is next, and the girls love him. What’s not to love about a boy who’s cute, talented, and can perform well? He takes another shot at Ed Sheeran, and he does it better than the first time. What’s not to love about Jean? After Jean, Sonika Vaid takes the stage and shows everyone up with her flawless vocal range. Everything about her performance and the vocal was enchanting. With or without the competition, Vaid will have a lifelong career. “Your voice is out of this world,” Lopez added.
We’re not sure what the hype is all about but Jeneve Rose Mitchell covers “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash and does not nail it. She’s a far better musician than a singer. Her strengths are lacking but America seems to be interested. She won’t take the title of American Idol but she might stick around for another week or two.
The heartthrob of the competition was saved for last but we wouldn’t mind the show being all about him at this point. Mackenzie Bourg does his original song, “Roses” and we’re falling deeper in love with him as a person and as an artist. Bourg is showing America what he would be like as a solo artist, and it’s brilliant. He’s top 5 material.
Tonight we find out who the top 10 will be. Who do you think will advance to the next round? Who are your favorites? Sound off in the comments below. Don’t forget to tune into the 2 hour result show with an appearance from Kelly Clarkson tonight on FOX at 8 ET.
