Yesterday Judas Priest released their new live CD/DVD, Battle Cry, through Epic Records, Examiner was sent a copy to review. The recording took place on August 1, 2015 at the Wacken Festival in Germany. An enormous audience of 85,000 amazing metal maniacs were in attendance, the scale of which can be truly appreciated when the camera pulls back capturing the full scope of the scene for the viewer. Battle Cry has been released on both a 15-track CD and the entire show was recorded for Blu-ray/DVD, which runs about 94 minutes. It is also available on digital audio and video formats. The DVD and Blu-ray have 3 additional bonus tracks which were recorded in Poland at The Ergo Arena in Gdansk, on December 10, 2015.
This live video performance will instantly take local Baltimore fans back to when Judas Priest brought their Redeemer of Souls Tour to Pier Six Pavilion in the fall of 2014. Priest opens the set with a fierce rendition of “Dragonaut” and the double guitar attack of Richie Faulker and Glenn Tipton’s fingers ferociously flying up and down their fretboards. A highlight of the Baltimore concert was when the band played “Victim of Changes” and it was wonderful to relive that magical moment through the video captured at Wacken on Battle Cry. Faulker really explodes on this track and is an absolute animal on his guitar solos. Rob Halford is phenomenal hitting and holding the notes as only he can.
What makes Battle Cry’s track listing so attractive is the balance between some of Judas Priest’s new classics like “Redeemer of Souls” and the hammering energy of “Halls of Valhalla,” to classic head banger tracks such as “Metal Gods,” “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” and “Electric Eye.” Other favorite album tracks were” “Beyond the Realms of Death,” a song where Tipton’s solo was exceptional, “Devil’s Child” and “Jawbreaker.” A sure standout though is “Turbo Lover.” The song slowly builds, pounding and climbing to the climax of the chorus. The audience at Wacken explodes with delight, their fists pumping in the air and everyone singing along with each word.
Judas Priest has been one of the greatest live Heavy Metal bands for decades and documents how they have earned and held on to that reputation on Battle Cry. Priest continues to rock as hard as ever, proving they are still, and always will be, the metal gods. Battle Cry is available for download on iTunes or for purchase on Amazon as well as other retail stores.
