On the night of Oct. 16, 2014, Skylar Nemetz, a Soldier at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, pulled the trigger on a new AR-15 and shot his teenage wife in the back of the head; an injury no one could survive. Yesterday, Nemetz appeared in court to stand trial for Danielle Nemetz’s death. He has been charged with murder in the first degree.
According to police who arrived on scene the night of the incident, Danielle, just 19, was sitting in front of her computer when she was shot. The bullet went completely through her skull and into the computer screen. She died immediately.
The Tacoma News Tribune, a locally respected newspaper in the South Sound said Pierce County deputy prosecutor Greg Greer told the court, “Nemetz gave police several accounts of what happened…including that his wife shot herself, that the gun went off when he shook it and that it fired when he rested it against his thigh.”
As in every murder trial, the defense will present a totally different side of the case than the prosecution. The defense maintains that Danielle’s death was an accident while the prosecution will try to prove Skylar murdered his teen wife in a cold-blooded rage.
Pierce County Prosecutor Greg Greer’s account:
Nemetz had texted his wife repeatedly to get alcohol for him. When Nemetz returned home and found out she’d gotten another man to buy the booze, he was furious.
Greer told the court Nemetz didn’t let neighbors in to see Danielle after the shooting and didn’t call 911. He flushed the alcohol his wife had gotten him down the toilet before officers arrived, because he was underage.
At the time of his wife’s murder, Nemetz was a specialist with the 7th Infantry Division at JBLM. Joint Base Lewis-McChord was his first duty-station.
Danielle’s family set up a fundraising site following her death to help pay for expenses. They were able to raise less than $1,000 to transport her body back to her home in California and pay for her funeral. They wrote this on her site:
Tarrah Danielle Rippeon – Nemetz’s life was tragically taken from us October 16th, 2014 at the age of 19 while residing in the State of Washington with her husband. Her husband Skylar Nemetz was charged in her death with 1st Degree Murder. We have every indication that this was not and accident. All the evidence , statements, and investigation clearly indicates that Skylar murdered Danielle in a cold blooded rage, tried to cover up evidence and initially lied about her death before he confessed and then later plead not guilty.
