Normally, people consider the word when it comes to academic excellence or even one’s creativity expressed at a higher level. The higher level thinking and creative work of the team of (DJ) Genius and Jason clearly evokes a similar sentiment when it comes to the work they are doing within the entertainment industry on an individual level, but eve more when it comes to their partnership in being among the more energetic and creative teams around.
Take DJ Genius for example.
In our phone interview on Monday, February 22, 2016, the German-born and metro-Atlanta raised artist is a life-long lover of music. Ranging from exposure to bands such as (but not limited to) Earth, Wind, and Fire and other 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s works through his father’s collection, his passion for music goes beyond the days of toting book-bags full of the “old-school” 300 portfolio compact disc holders; it eventually gets enhanced even further from his time at Southern Polytecnic (now Kennesaw State University) and being the “go-to” person for his chapter (of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.) from their house-party and get-together days.
“I remember making custom cd’s from my computer; in fact, I remember how I have to drag my computer setup from place to place”, he recalls.
From the humble beginning of using technology then to combining it with his elite-level use of traditional (turntables) and contemporary means, DJ Genius is one of the more sought-after and highly respected artists in the industry. With a resume that includes serving as the official DJ for Ford Motor Company as well as the founder of one of the more experienced dj collectives (the Timeless DJ’s), along with a listing of feature performances including (but not limited to) work with the Atlanta Falcons, the Atlanta Hawks, he has a solid track record of performances. Combined with the upcoming events of the Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage (cruise), and the Essence Music Festival (as he has a record of working both events the past few years), his energy, synergy, and overall excellence speaks for itself.
The same holds true for his partner, Mr. Jason Carey.
Even at an early age, the Richmond, VA native has a unique, energetic, yet sincere ability to connect with multiple audiences, including his early artistry in plays, to his later growth in song-writing. Even during a lean period, he knew it is a matter of time.
“During part of my journey (which includes leaving the field of engineering to pursue his entertainment and hosting career), I was actually homeless. Everything didn’t go as expected, but I know that I have to keep pushing through”, he shares.
Working through such a challenging time period is what makes him one of the more passionate, engaging, and more respected hosts around. His equally impressive track record including recognition by ATL’s Hottest Awards in 2013-14 (as the Hottest Host and Hottest Rising Star), hosting events ranging from The Atlanta Prom, the Steve Harvey Neighborhood Awards, the Atlanta Mardi Gras, and the Essence Music Festival, and related work with his upcoming feature in the play The Heart of a Man. Through his JC Squared on the Air radio show (on IBNX), his presence and platform clearly make him a true “life of the party”.
It is through their collective work via Playdate Atlanta where the two innovative artists are able to first work together and eventually forge their partnership through the Genius and Jason brand. DJ Genius recalls Jason’s genuine and energetic way in connecting with audiences, and Jason recalls the distinct manner in which Genius is able to connect with the audience. After the proverbial “it’s a matter of time”, the two join forces, and their combined efforts are a seamless combination of a high-caliber and high-energy hosting and DJ duo, including the DJ (Genius) even leaving the turntables to mix and mingle with the audience to get things at an even higher energy level.
“We’re traveling all-year and working on some great partnerships (and events) nationwide”, Genius adds. With upcoming events in Houston, Miami, Orlando, as well as the aforementioned summer events of the Essence Music Festival and the Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage cruise, the duo is fast-rising in leading the way for events full of vivacity and infectious enthusiasm.
Through DJ Genius’ individual platforms (on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @djgeniusatl), as well as Jason “J-Boy” Carey’s platforms (Instagram, Twitter, and Periscope @Jason804), their individual work already speaks for itself. And that is pure genius given the work of DJ Genius and Jason Carey.
