If you truly love flowers and gardening then you don’t want to miss the special Garden Discovery Day event being held at Kingwood Center Gardens in Mansfield, Ohio on Saturday, May 7.
A Bit About Kingwood Center Gardens Opened as a public garden in 1953, Kingwood Center Gardens is situated on a 47-acre estate once owned by Charles Kelley King who made his fortune in Mansfield working with the Ohio Brass Company. Built in 1926, the 26-room, three-story French Provincial manor house on the estate (Kingwood Hall) now houses a horticultural library. The multitude of gardens on the estate are the main attraction and include the Terrace Garden, the Woodland Garden, the Herb Garden, season garden displays and a greenhouse.
A family-friendly event, Garden Discovery Day offers several activities that all age groups can enjoy. Gardening enthusiasts will be able to purchase a wide variety of items for their gardening needs including flowers and plants, garden art, compost, herb and vegetable plants, mushrooms and native plants. Horticultural experts will be on hand to help visitors decide which plants and flowers will suit their needs.
For the children, there will be the Peacock Playhouse where they can learn all about the gorgeous birds and take part in activities like crafts, face painting and a taste testing of the peacocks menu. Hours for the Peacock Playhouse are 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Cost is $5 per child. There will also be a Children’s May Pole Dance offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m at the Kingwood Hall forecourt.
Visitors will also be able to take a self-guided tour of Kingwood Hall (from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.). Be sure to see all the spectacular fresh floral displays that will be exhibited throughout the historic mansion.
The event will provide a “Plant Check” service where visitors’ purchases will be held for them until they are ready to leave and then volunteers will help load all purchases into their cars.
Visitors who arrive early at Garden Discovery Day will be able to partake of coffee and doughnuts. Lunchtime foods available for purchase include Ed Pickens’ grilled burgers, brats and hot dogs.
Hours for Garden Discovery Day are 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Admission is $5 per car and $2 for bicycles and walk-ins. For more information about Garden Discovery Day or about Kingwood Center Gardens, call 419-522-0211 or get online at www.kingwoodcenter.org.
