Is the beach good for you? Absolutely! Despite all the warnings about the sun, skin cancer, and dehydration, the beach is still a healthy activity for families. Physically and mentally, there are many health benefits gained by going to the beach as a family.
The sun can be good for you. It’s true that sunburn and skin cancer are very real threats to your health. Dehydration causes many health issues as well. However, the sun also alleviates depression and helps your body manufacture Vitamin D. Aim for 10-15 minutes of direct sun per day. To avoid overexposure at the beach, bring your umbrella and wear sunscreen the rest of the day.
If you live where the waves are high enough, you could take up surfing to perfect your balance and coordination. It’s totally awesome for you, dude! But even if you don’t, there are plenty of other fun things you can do at the beach to stay in shape. There’s beach volleyball, of course. You can even rent a paddle boat, water trike or canoe at some beaches.
Swimming is excellent exercise. You don’t need any special equipment to do it, either. It involves utilizing proper breathing and involves most major muscle groups. Water provides gentle movement for proper resistance. Best of all, swimming is fun! It doesn’t feel at all like exercise. This alleviates workout boredom.
Ever see those beach joggers? They look to be in great shape, don’t they? That’s because they’re getting a superior work out. Shifting sand makes traction a challenge. This forces their muscles to work harder as they jog. Of course, you don’t have to work that hard unless you want to. Just walking around the beach in the sand benefits health. Barefoot is the best way to go for optimum results.
The human mind and body need rest from time to time. Many people become so involved with getting things done they forget to relax occasionally. High stress levels really make an impact on health. The physical body needs rest in order to regenerate. So bring a book to the beach and lay under an umbrella. Or just float freely on the waves. It benefits your health!
Spending time together as a family strengthens bonds. Children whose parents spend time with them have a sense of security and belonging essential to mental health. At the beach, there are no distractions to keep Mom and Dad from spending time with their children. Remember, “The family that plays together, stays together!”
The human need to create can be fulfilled on the beach by building sand castles. Kids won’t even realize they’re learning at the beach. Sand castle building strengthens hand/eye coordination and boosts problem solving skills. How do we put a moat around the castle without the water eroding it? How much water do we need to hold the sand together? Like most forms of art, the health benefits of sand castle building are endless.
So, go ahead. Bring your family to the beach. The sun won’t do you harm It’s not just a fun way to spend the day. It’s healthy and educational too!
