Between his current band Devil You Know and one-time outfit Killswitch Engage, Howard Jones has been the distinctive voice behind one of heavy metal’s veteran heavyweight groups and the latest modern version of himself. On a forthcoming unique evening in the Alamo City, those aspects of Jones’ career will come together. Sort of.
Devil You Know will support Atreyu, along with From Ashes To New, Cane Hill and Anonymous Henchmen on Wednesday, March 16 at Alamo City Music Hall (tickets here). Less than 5 miles away, Killswitch Engage will headline the Aztec Theatre. But lest you think that’s a predicament, Jones came up with a feasible solution of seeing both shows when he went “Into the Pit” this past Friday.
Solving such a dilemma probably came natural to Jones because he’s had much more difficult situations to live through. Namely, his bout with Type 2 diabetes that sapped him of his energy and forced him to leave Killswitch Engage in the first place. Once his health was back in order, Jones helped form Devil You Know, which will be touring here in support of second album They Bleed Red. The record includes the fantasy-becomes-reality video single for “The Way We Die” (watch here) and follows up 2014 disc The Beauty of Destruction.
Jones, guitarist Francesco Artusato (All Shall Perish, The Francesco Artusato Project), bassist Ryan Wombacher (Bleeding Through) and drummer John Sankey (Devolved, Fear Factory, Divine Heresy) sport impressive resumes from previous bands. They showcased how they sound together during their San Antonio live debut at Fall Ball in October 2014, during which Jones exhibited some of his well-known sense of humor.
Jones also delivered his version of one of heavy metal’s renowned classic songs when Killswitch Engage covered Dio’s “Holy Diver.” On They Bleed Red, Jones and Devil You Know perform another well-known cover that can be found as a bonus track (listen here).
