We had the pleasure of speaking with 5-Time Olympic medalist Sanya Richards Ross at the launch of the Technogym SKILLMILL in March 2016 in New York, NY. Not only is Richards Ross is one of the most decorated Olympians in Track & Field, she is also Technogym’s newest Brand Ambassador.
Check out our interview with Sanya Richards Ross:
Elizabeth Tam (ET): Right now we are in 2016 and the Rio Olympics are coming up, what is going through your head right now?
Sanya Richard Ross (SRR): Oh my goodness, I can’t believe four years went by so quickly, but it’s just really exciting. This will be my fourth Olympic games, God willing, and I am training really, really hard and looking forward to representing Team USA one more time.
ET: What are you doing differently in your training?
SRR: First of all, I feel like I have a really great team: my coach Coach Clyde Hart, Coach Michael Johnson to Olympic gold, Jeremy Wariner, then myself, so I really trust my coach. We’ve been going really hard. I feel like now I’m training a little smarter and not harder because I’m older and more mature so I really want to draw on my experience to compete at my best; so just really do a little bit of the same old thing, but also try to put some new things in my training and maybe using some new equipment or doing some cross training, that’s also been helpful as well.
ET: You were named the new brand ambassador of Technogym, why don’t you tell us a little bit about that collaboration.
SRR: It’s been awesome, I’ve been a huge fan of the Technogym brand for a long time. They’ve been outfitting the Olympic games since 2000, so every Olympics I’ve been to I always see the Technogym equipment and have just come to trust the brand and really love the brand, so to be a brand ambassador going into 2016 is just really awesome. Today they just premiered the SKILLMILL, which is just an amazing, amazing piece of equipment, which I’ll be training on too for the Olympics, so I’m super excited.
ET: How do you think the SKILLMILL will differentiate your training from how it was before?
SRR: One of the things I love about the SKILLMILL is that it is non-motorized, so you power the machine. A lot of the times when you try to get data from a treadmill, I do not know how accurate it is because you might think you are going at 16 miles an hour but you are not sure. On the SKILLMILL it is all your power, all your speed, so I can really track and monitor how fast I am running and really compare that to what I want to do in the race. A lot of the times of course there are the elements outside, it’s raining, it’s cold, it’s whatever, and to be able to have great workouts indoors, it is a great benefit and I’m excited about that.
ET: Going into the Olympics, what race will mean the most to you this year?
SRR: I’m hoping to make the team in the 400 and the 4X4 Relay, so of course if I could win the 400 again, for me, that would be the icing on the cake for a great career. But I also look forward to the 4X4 relay and running with my teammates and winning 4 consecutive gold medals in the 4X4 relay would be phenomenal. Both races will be great, so we’ll see what happens!
Thank you Sanya Richards Ross for taking the time to speak with us an we wish you and Team USA all the best of luck at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
