Our guest today is Courtney Kristel, author of the romantic suspense, Beautifully Shattered. Courtney graduated from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, but she couldn’t shake her true passion for writing. She’s currently working on the second novel of the Beautifully Series, Beautifully Mended. When she isn’t creating stories to share with the world, Courtney usually has a book in her hands or is searching for new music to add to her writing playlist.
Beautifully Shattered answers the questions what would you do if your world fell apart right before your eyes and if everything you held dear was stolen before you had a chance to say goodbye, would you give up or keep fighting? Adalynn Maxwell didn’t decide to give up. She was robbed of her choice.
After years of therapy, Adalynn finally wants to move on and her brother’s sexy best friend Jax lures her further out of her shell. But she doesn’t understand his game and he changes the rules at every turn, making her fall into the waiting arms of the mysterious Doctor Kohen Daniels, whom she can’t seem to avoid. She’s terrified of trusting him, but something about him makes her want to bare her soul.
Adalynn is desperate for that all-consuming love she reads about, but doesn’t believe she deserves it. Her desperation to prove to Jax that she isn’t a little girl anymore may ruin her forever. One wrong decision can change her entire future. She has one last choice to make, but will it be ripped away from her like everything else? Will she pay the ultimate price?
Dorothy Thompson: Thank you for this interview, Courtney. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?
Courtney Kristel: Thanks for having me! I love all animals and always stop for strays, much to my mom’s annoyance. I’ve been an avid horse rider for as long as I can remember. When I’m not writing I love to facetime my best friend since we live in different states, spend time with my dog Rileey, and listen to my five year old nephew tell me all about his day.
I’ve been writing since I was fourteen, it was a way to escape from reality for a little while. Beautifully Shattered was the first book that I ever thought about finishing. Thanks to my sisters and my dad, Beautifully Shattered was published. It was their love for the characters, their belief in me, that made the story possible.
D.T.: Can you tell us briefly what your book is about?
C.K.: Adalynn is the main character and she’s trying to survive an unbearable loss she suffered six years ago. She’s finally realizing that she’s still breathing, she hasn’t given up completely yet, she’s still alive, and she’s going to fight to get her life back. After years of therapy, Addie finds herself in a love triangle between her brother’s best friend, and the mysterious doctor who lives in her building. In her desperate search for that all-consuming love her parents had, to have someone not hide their feelings for her, she has one more choice to make. Will it be ripped away from her like everything else? Will her past always haunt her and cause her to pay the ultimate price?
D.T.: Why did you choose your particular genre?
C.K.: I wrote the ending of the book first, from that I assumed it was going to be suspense, not a romantic suspense. But as I began to write the beginning of Beautifully Shattered, I realized that Adalynn’s love for Jax was the series. Their love is everything she’s dreamed about. I knew then what genre Beautifully Shattered was going to be, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
D.T.: What was your greatest challenge writing this book?
C.K.: I’ve written quite a few books that never got finished. So the hardest challenge with this book was staying motivated. It was so easy to throw my hands up in the air, and give up. My sister, Heather was the reason why I kept writing. She fell in love with the characters just as much as I did. She needed to find out what happened to them, just as much as I did. I will always be grateful to her for constantly nagging me.
D.T.: Are you published by a traditional house, small press or are you self-published?
C.K.: I self published through Amazon.
D.T.: Was it the right choice for you?
C.K.: I believe it was. I wanted all the control and the freedom to write whatever I want, instead of sticking with a particular genre.
D.T.: How is that going for you?
C.K.: It’s going great! I’m working on getting more readers and spreading the word of my first book. I still can’t believe that I have a book available for people to read. My mind is still blown when I receive emails asking about the next book and guesses to Addie’s missing memory.
D.T.: Can you tell us one thing you have done that actually resulted in one or more sales?
C.K.: Before Beautifully Shattered was released I used social media daily (something I need to get back in the habit of) and I posted teaser’s every day before the book release. Before the Beautifully Shattered was even out, I was getting emails from readers telling me how excited they were to read it! Emails from fans makes my day each and every time.
D.T.: Do you have another job besides writing?
C.K.: I’m in event marketing and I love my “day job.” Every day I look forward to going to work, talking to my co-workers, and going home to write. I’ve had other jobs that I dreaded waking up for, I hated it and that puts a toll on a person. Always find a job that suits you, something that you get excited for. You only get one try at life, might as well make sure you’re happy paying the bills C:
D.T.: If you could give one book promotion tip to new authors, what would that be?
C.K.: Social media is your best friend, it’s the best way to connect with fans and to promote yourself if you’re going the indie route like I have. Book blogs already have fans who read post daily, so if you can get onto blogs, you’re not having to find the readers since the blogs already have dedicated fans.
D.T.: What’s next for you?
C.K.: I’m currently working on the second book of the Beautifully Series, Beautifully Mended. I’m excited to see how the rest of Adalynn’s story is going to play out. Adalynn and Jax are going to face challenges that are either going to make their relationship stronger or break them forever. There’s no more back and forth with those two, this is their final chance for a happy ending.
D.T.: Thank you for this interview, Courtney. Can you tell us where we can find you on the web?
C.K.: It was a pleasure! You can find me on my website, Twitter, and Facebook page.
