User-generated online gaming platform Roblox is launching a dedicated Xbox One application today, January 27. Available on PC since 2006 and mobile platforms since 2013, the Roblox community has created millions of games with about 6 million creations built a year.
Creations built on Roblox can as broad and diverse as working at a pizza restaurant, being a runway model, city and town simulations, and paintball games. The platform boasts 15 million players logging in each month generating 80 million hours of playtime across PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices. I had a chance to discuss the new Roblox app for Xbox One with David Baszucki, founder and CEO of Roblox.
“The Xbox One is really Roblox moving into the living room,” said Baszucki. “When the Xbox One app launches, those same experiences that our players have come to know and love on other devices will be available on Xbox Live.”
Since all Roblox games run in the cloud, Xbox One players can play the same games together with mobile and desktop players. Xbox One users can only play the games, and not create them. Creating games requires the Roblox Studio program for desktops, but testing games on the Xbox One will be available sometime after launch.
“For the launch, we are going to lead with 15 high quality curated experiences that are very popular across the platform. Over time, we will expand what is available on the Xbox One until, ultimately, it is just the same as on the phone, tablet, or computer where millions of experiences are available to play.”
All games on Roblox are free to download, and the creators themselves can offer microtransactions within the games. A game such as Bird Simulator, included at launch, could offer the ability to play as an eagle through microtransactions.
“Our top creators earn upwards of $20,000 a month creating these games for the platform.” Baszucki shared. “The developers for the first round of Roblox games on Xbox One come from around the world with some as young as 13 years old.”
Creators have complete control over the price of the microtransactions and receive 25 percent of all revenue generated from sales.
“It’s almost like running their own business. It’s not just making their games fun, but figuring out to what extent they want to monetize their game,” explained Baszucki. “These creators are trying all new types of gameplay and innovative ways of monetizing in the free market of Roblox. If their pricing is too high, no one is going to want to buy it and their game won’t do well.”
The Roblox app for Xbox One is available now on the Xbox Games Store.
