Every hero has a sidekick. So it is on Disney’s K.C. Undercover, where K.C. Cooper wouldn’t be the same without the support of her brother Ernie, played by Kamil McFadden. LA Fan Cultures Examiner spoke to Kamil on Thursday ahead of tomorrow’s first season finale, to find out what fans can expect from the big episode and how it’s been for him to be a part of the spy action.
“This is my first series that I’ve been a series regular,” he told us. “I’ve guest starred on a couple shows but this is my first series regular [role], so it’s great to come to work and do something you love with people that you love. I’m super grateful about that.”
Ernie is an incredibly relatable character – who among us hasn’t wished to be a hero at some point? – but that wasn’t the quality that attracted Kamil to the part. “One of the things that made me want to play this guy is his goofiness,” he explained. “I feel like I am goofy as well, not to the extent that he, is but that’s something that I connected with. He just tries as hard to be a part of the team and do whatever he can and I feel like that’s where we connect and we relate. We just try, no matter what.”
“I am nowhere near Ernie’s level with computers,” he laughed. “I don’t know how to hack into a firewall. I don’t know any of that stuff. I think that might be illegal, but I don’t know to wipe data from my computer. I just know how to turn it on, type and [use] certain apps and the Internet and that’s it.”
Sunday’s last episode of the season is just as big for his character as it is for K.C. “For the season one finale be on the lookout for a change in Ernie,” Kamil teased. “He pulls his weight. He does the unthinkable. He becomes a man in a sense and he shows the fans and the audience why he’s a part of this team. I’m super excited for the audience and K.C. Undercover fans to see that part of him.”
That character development will extend into season two. “We are actually filming season two now,” he said, “and some of the stuff that I did wish for is actually happening. You may see him with a counterpart, I don’t know, in season two. You just see him grow into his own and become more part of the team than he normally is. His relationship with K.C. is growing and you see more interaction between them.”
Kamil has a great friendship off-screen with both the show’s fans and his TV sister Zendaya. “I still am not used to walking down the street and people actually saying, ‘Oh, that’s Ernie, can I take a picture with you?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, sure!'” he said. ” It never crosses my mind. I always forget that I’m on TV. I try and be as normal as possible, I don’t like to put a lot on it.
“But one interaction I had with a fan which was super crazy, I was with Zendaya and she asked Zendaya could she take a picture with me,” he recalled. “That’s never happened before because Zendaya’s a huge star. They know her from Shake It Up already [and] she’s been on Disney for years so that’s a familiar face, but for the fan to tap Zendaya – this huge star – to ask for a picture with me, I was blown away.”
“I’ve got to be honest, the coolest thing that I’ve ever done is just hanging out with Zendaya and seeing all of the people she knows. She knows a ton of people,” he continued. “We went to [Universal Studios Hollywood’s] Halloween Horror Nights and we were like VIP there and I think that was one of the coolest things…It was a group thing, some of the cast of K.C. Undercover came so it was really fun.”
For all the love that he gets from his friends and fans, Kamil spends his time making sure he gives just as much if not more. “I just love to give back whenever I can,” he told us. “Charity’s a big thing I like to do in my spare time, and I like hanging out with friends. I hang out with Zendaya all the time.
“I also have a brother who’s in the NFL [Kimario McFadden]; he plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” he added. “I’m just proud that me and him have such a great relationship and we push each other to do things that we love.”
