Freeform’s original series Shadowhunters just scored a Season 2 renewal, so hopefully that means we’ll see more of Meliorn, the fantastic recurring character played by Jade Hassoune. LA Fan Cultures Examiner spoke to the actor recently to find out what about the faerie attracted him to the role and how the series is right in his wheelhouse.
“It’s the perfect role that I’ve always talked about,” he enthused. “I’ve always wanted to play a faerie or an elf or that type of mythical being and so it was just perfect. I did come in knowing about the show and all that through a different avenue; I auditioned for Alec first, then Raphael, and Meliorn was the third surprise. By that point I was really deep into it, and I saw that it was the faerie [character] and I was so excited. I’m really glad that it turned out this way.”
Having to take some time before he booked the series wound up working to Jade’s advantage in the end. “The audition process was about a month long,” he told us, “so by that point I had started reading a little bit and I realized this has a huge fan base and so much fan fiction and fan art and I really got a taste of it. So when I got the part, everything happened so quickly that I’m glad that it took me a while to delve into it, because I was shooting the week after.”
Shadowhunters also gave him an opportunity to portray a character over multiple episodes, and show a regular audience everything that he’s capable of doing over more than just one block of time. “It’s an actor’s dream to get a character that you get to develop and get to go deeper into,” he said, “and I’m so excited to be a part of this book series. I know the arc and I wish and hope that we get to continue telling the story because I want to tell the full arc.
“The best part is that the writers get to make new stories as well. There’s nothing like revisiting a character and exploring the being he is and making it more and more every time. It’s interesting to me because sometimes you don’t know what the writers have in store for you, so you’re kind of always on your toes about that.”
Thematically, the series is right up the alley of the things that Jade is passionate about as a fan. “I’m obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” he told us. “That’s my fandom. I’m still following the story in comics and so I’m the biggest Buffy fanboy, around me anyway. I’m kind of all in. I’ve rewatched it so many countless times.”
“I normally read graphic novels,” he continued. “books about what it means to be a human and how can you improve your life. I love books about consciousness and evolution and things like that. I read a lot of nonfiction, so it’s really refreshing to read fiction.”
Though there are just a few episodes left in the Shadowhunters season, fans who want to see more of this up and coming actor can also check out his recently completed web series, That’s My DJ, which is releasing on Vimeo. The project was a turning point for him, because it put him in the spotlight. “Every season follows a different character and my character Sam is [the focus of] season three,” he said.
“That was my first experience in a lead in a project and was with a incredible team of young professionals,” Jade concluded. “It’s just been a wonderful experience and I can’t wait for it to come out. It’s all about the underground, electronic music scene.” From making magic to making music, Jade is clearly climbing his way up in the acting world.
