Brighton Sharbino stars in Miracles From Heaven, the new Christian drama film based on a true story. The actress plays Abby Beam, whose ten-year-old sister Anna (Kylie Rogers) experiences a miraculous recovery after a near-death experience. LA Fan Cultures Examiner spoke to Brighton to find out what she loved about the film and the biggest perk of having Jennifer Garner portray your mom.
“I think the story’s super cool and I think the fact that it’s based off a true story is really cool,” she said of what drew her to the picture. “Before Miracles from Heaven, I’d never played a real person so I think that was really different and I just tried my best to make sure I honored the actual person.”
What was her favorite part of the film? “Doing the tree scene was really cool for me,” Brighton told us, “because I got to show a lot of emotion in that and we got to rock climb for months so that we could be prepared for that scene.”
Of course getting to say that Jennifer Garner was your on-screen mother was pretty cool, too. “Just being around Jennifer, she’s such a great person and she’s just so sweet and talented,” Brighton said. “I think that’s one of my favorite parts about [working] on Miracles from Heaven, was that all the actors and actresses were so talented and I got to work with such amazing people.”
It represented a major change of pace from her previous roles in the intense dramas True Detective and The Walking Dead. Needless to say there’s not much in common between Abby and Brighton’s performances on those shows. “I think the characters are very different between Walking Dead and Miracles,” she continued. “It’s great how I get to play different roles and I like playing characters with lots of depth, so I think it was a really good opportunity for me.”
As one of three children – her older sister is fellow actress Saxon Sharbino, who appeared in the TV series Touch, and she has a nine-year-old brother as well – Brighton knows all about the importance of family. When it comes to inspirational films, though, that’s a little tougher subject. “I pretty much get inspired by every movie, because I get so into the movie,” she told us. “Every person has a different perspective on things and every movie is different. Water for Elephants was one of my favorite movies.”
There’s one more thing on her acting wish list: “I’d love to do an action role,” Brighton enthused. “I love action roles. I want to continue doing characters with depth and I want to do action roles.”
Miracles From Heaven is in theaters now.
