It’s been almost 20 years since big budget disaster movie kings, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich gave moviegoers the film that defined the genre, “Independence Day”, while also being the movie that catapulted Will Smith from wayward youth hiding out at his aunt and uncle’s place until the heat dies down into mega movie star.
Devlin and Emmerich are back with the long-awaited second entry in the franchise, “Independence Day: Resurgence”. In this one the evil alien invaders, after having so improbably gotten their butts kicked by us primitive humanoids the last time, return with reinforcements. Unfortunately, not returning for the film is Smith, who won’t be reprising his role as Captain Steve Hiller.
Reportedly Smith and filmmakers couldn’t agree on a salary for the star to do the film and so Smith walked. In story Smith’s Captain Hiller has likewise been written out after meeting an untimely end during a weapons test gone wrong. However, a bevy of other stars from the first film are returning, including Jeff Goldblum, Vivica Fox, Judd Hirsch and Bill Pullman.
In the aftermath of the events of the first movie, dubbed ‘The War of 1996’ the Earth’s governments band together and create a global defense force in preparation for a possible future attack. They reverse engineer a lot of the aliens’ tech, integrating it into their own to create a number of hybrid fighter planes and other advanced weaponry.
Unbeknownst to them the defeated aliens managed to send out a distress signal before their destruction and an even larger battalion than the first is on its way to Earth. In addition, random scatterings of alien survivors have gone into hiding on Earth. A group of them gather in a desolate region of the Congo and create an outpost there. The Earthlings’ defense capabilities have improved a lot since the last fight. However, the invaders have made some significant improvements of their own.
Newcomer Liam Hemsworth (“The Hunger Games”) is slated to star as pilot, Jake Morrison. Jesse Usher (“When the Game Stands Tall”) stars as Dylan Dubrow-Hiller, stepson of the late Captain Hiller. We previously saw Dylan as the little boy fleeing the walls of flame with his mom, Vivica’s Jasmine Dubrow after Los Angeles was obliterated in ID4. Now young Dylan is all grown up and struggling with trying to fill his dad’s substantial shoes.
“Independence Day: Resurgence” invades our air space on June 24, 2016.
