On Saturday, May 14, 2016, Strathmore will offer Seminars for Career Musicians. This essential workshop is vital for anyone involved in the business of music. The event will be held from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm in the Strathmore Mansion.
Strathmore has made it a mission to empower musicians and through their series of professional development seminars, there are opportunities to gain expert advice and strategies for taking your craft to the next level.
The day long workshop will be comprised of five seminars as follows:
9:30 am to 10:30 am Show Me the Money: Maximizing Returns From Your Music. The first seminar of the day will be hosted by Ken Avis, a musician, economist and Strathmore Artist in Residence mentor. Topics covered in this discussion include pricing the gig, making money from merchandising, steaming music royalties and more.
10:45 am to 11:45 am Getting to YES: A Behind the Scenes Look at a Promoter’s World. This integral portion of the schedule will be hosted by Georgina Javor, Assistant Director of Programming, Jazz at Lincoln Center. This forum offers a glimpse behind the curtain at how professional booking works for nonprofit and commercial presenters, how to present yourself to professional promoters and the best strategies for success.
12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Dealing with Stage Fright This issue will be presented by Seth Kibel, musician, composer and Strathmore Artist in Residence mentor. Kibel, a former stage fright sufferer, shows how to turn performance anxiety issues into assets rather than a debilitating experience.
1:45 pm to 2:45 pm Score! Andrew Simpson, composer. Keyboardist, head of Theory and Composition at The Catholic University of America, will present this exciting topic. This seminar showcases opportunities in the field of Composition for film in addition to the repertoire of a composer and performer of music for film, including silent film.
3:00 pm to 4:00 pm The final topic of the day discusses How to Manage a Band with Daryl Davis, a Strathmore Artist in Residence mentor, musician, author, actor and bandleader. This seminar covers everything from running effective rehearsals to dealing with divas, letting someone go and keeping everyone reasonably happy.
