The Cincinnati Museum Center is giving visitors the opportunity to view a rare and unique collection of cultural artifacts from around the world (all acquired by a variety of global travelers) with their special “Treasures of Travel” exhibit running from now through June.
Celebrating Cincinnatians and those connected to Cincinnati, “Treasures of Travel” is comprised of 11 vignettes of individual or family travel that feature more than 280 artifacts and objects collected from around the globe in areas like the South Pacific, Africa, South America, Europe, Southeast Asia and the American Southwest.
The centerpiece of this unique exhibit features stories, photographs, movies and artifacts from the collection of Julius and Dorette Fleischmann who took a world cruise from 1921-1932 on their private yacht “Camargo” (the largest and most expensive personal yacht built in America at the time) with a crew of 36. During the year-long cruise, the yacht ventured through the Panama Canal, across the Pacific, through Southeast Asia, up the Gulf of Suez, into the Mediterranean and finally back to America.
A featured attraction of “Treasure of Travel” is some never before seen Amazonian featherwork collected by Robin Adair during the 1980’s. Items include headdresses, masks, loincloths and arm/leg/ear ornaments all with spectacular featherwork, some featuring colorful Amazon birds like macaws and parrots.
And be sure to check out the collection of cultural artifacts from world traveler and filmmaker Lewis Cotlow featuring items from the South Pacific, Africa, South American and the Arctic.
