Immaculate Conception (IC) defeated Staten Island Academy (SIA), 62-60, in high school girls’ basketball. It was Immaculate Conception’s Senior Night and Francesca Rae Marcano, Autumn Webster, and Jasmine Gee were honored.
Staten Island Academy jumped to a 10-3 lead by the 3:39 mark in the first quarter. Corinn Baggs is great at attacking the basket. She can finish with either hand and is good at doing a pump fake in the air. She is tough to defend.
Immaculate Conception called a time-out and returned to the floor with a better game plan. They looked to defend the basket more from the dangerous drives of SIA. Breyenne Bellerand looked to to cut hard to the basket. She was also able to find open teammates on the blocks while driving. She had 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, 1 blocked shot, and 15 points. IC’s Autumn Webster played stellar defense. She was good at providing help on the drive and earning steals by stepping in the passing lane. She had 2 rebounds, 1 blocked shot, 5 steals, and 8 points. SIA led at the end of the quarter 16-10.
With 2:50 left in the half Immaculate Conception earned their first lead of the game, 28-27. Jasmine Gee had great spacing inside and knew how to drop to open spaces in the paint for quick lay-ups. She had 3 rebounds and 14 points. SIA quickly recovered and led at the half 31-30. Liz Althoff is a strong post player. She did a good job of sealing and finishing off a variety of moves. She had 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 blocked shot, and 9 points. Sophia Demurro has a nice shot off the dribble. She had 9 points along with 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist.
The game was tied with 2:04 left in the third quarter, 42-42. IC’s Jordan McLemore used her explosive first step to dominate the half-court with pick and rolls. She was perceptive at finding teammates cutting to the basket in addition to the rolling post. She had 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 10 points. IC led at the end of the third quarter 49-48.
The game was far from over. SIA quickly regained the lead in the fourth quarter. Clare Mitchell was unstoppable. She was great at pressing the ball and drawing fouls. She was consistent from the foul line. She had 7 rebounds, 1 blocked shot, and 20 points.
Each team went back and forth in the lead for the remainder of the game. With 1:38 with IC in the lead 58-54 Bellerand fouled out. Freshman guard Jaelyn Wohlrab replaced her.
IC’s Devyn Dash had a couple of key three-point shots that kept IC in the game. Dash finished with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 blocked shot, and 13 points. SIA’s Cameron Corbett has strong fundamentals and can go hard to the basket. She had 5 rebounds and 9 points. SIA earned the lead back with 1:12 remaining, 59-58. With :55.9 remaining SIA’s Corinn Baggs fouled out. Following this SIA drew a foul and made one of the foul shots, 60-58.
On IC’s next possession there was an errant pass and Wohlrab got the ball off the floor and was fouled in the process. SIA was over the limit and Wohlrab made both foul shots to tie the game, 60-60. SIA brought the ball across half-court and looked for a scoring opportunity. Wohlrab then stole the ball and pushed for a full-court lay-up. She scored the basket to give IC the lead with 10 seconds remaining, 62-60. SIA was able to get a shot off afterwards but it did not fall.
