Immaculate Conception defeated High Point in overtime, 43-35, in high school girls’ basketball.
High Point started the game with a 12-0 run. They fast-breaked, attacked the seams of the defense, and was consistent from the outside. High Point’s Maddy Smith is a good floor leader. She communicates with her team and attacks the basket hard. She has the confidence to take difficult shots when the game is on the line. She had 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 blocked shot, and 8 points. At the end of the first quarter High Point led 15-11.
Immaculate Conception’s Breyenne Bellerand never takes off a possession. She works hard on defense looking to tip passes, make steals, box out, and rebound. On offense she looks to involve teammates and can aggressively attack the basket. She had 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 blocked shot, and 16 points. Ten of her points came from the foul line. High Point’s Margo Peterson did a great job scoring from the outside. She cut, used screens, and squared up for shots. She had 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist. High Point led at the half 26-17.
IC played much smarter defense in the third quarter and did not allow High Point to score. With 1:45 left in the third quarter IC’s Devin Dash made a pass inside to Jasmine Gee who scored to tie the game, 26-26. IC led at the end of the third 28-26. Gee had 6 rebounds, 1 blocked shot, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 14 points.
High Point rebounded the ball off a missed IC shot and pushed for a full-court lay-up. they were fouled during the lay-up and made the foul shot to complete the 3 point lead. High Point then led by 1 point, 29-28. High Point scored four more points on their next two possessions to extend their lead, 33-28. Casey Langenbach knows how to set and use screens. She can pass and cut. She had 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 assist, and 5 points.
With 1:28 remaining in the game IC’s Gee passed the ball to Bellerand who made it to tie the game 33-33. Neither team was able to score after this point and the game went into over-time.
High Point’s Trash Peterson is a strong defender who works hard for rebounds. She had 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 points. To start the over-time IC’s Dash hit a deep three-point shot 36-33. Dash had 1 assist, 1 steal, and 8 points. High Point tried to score on the next possession, but turned over the ball. Jordan McLemore was fouled while trying to use time on the clock. They were in the bonus and she made both foul shots, 38-33. McLemore did a great job at the point by looking for open teammates. She had 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 4 points.
High Point attacked the basket and drew a foul. They made both foul shots, 38-35. With :46.1 remaining Margo Peterson fouled out while fouling to stop the clock. Jasmine Gee made both foul shots, 40-33. At :31.1 High Point had possession of the ball and IC’s Autumn Webster tipped it. Bellerand chased it down and stole it back. High Point was able to get off a few outside shots, but they rimmed out.
