Staying over night in an igloo is enticing to some, which is probably why Airbnb has a category for listing an “igloo” as one of the accommodations offered to the website’s travelers. Even though Airbnb had something more elaborate in mind for that category, a group of friends thought their newly built Brooklyn igloo could make the grade!
The big East Coast snowstorm dumped plenty of the white stuff to build this igloo and a group of Brooklyn residents created the snow dome and listed it for $200 a night on Airbnb. Patrick Horton and his roommates constructed the igloo then created the listing on Airbnb to make this dwelling a hard one to pass up! They were surprised to see that there was a box on Airbnb to check if the dwelling you are willing to rent out is an igloo.
MSN News on January 25 reports what the listing offered. It started out with, “Dripping with ingenuity and alt-lifestyle aura lays the Snopocalypse of 2016’s most desirable getaway.” It continued with, “Hand-crafted, and built using only natural elements – we’re offering the experience of a life time in this chic dome-style bungalow for you and bae.”
According to the Huffington Post, “beers were definitely involved in this,” said Horton, who built this along with his roommates Griff Jones and Justin Seeley. Once they had the idea in their heads “we knew that we were going to do it,” said Horton.
Believe it or not five people seriously inquired about the igloo before Airbnb took the listing down. The listing went viral and was the buzz on social media as it spread across Reddit and Facebook. The trio of friends even went as far as furnishing the inside for a good night’s sleep and then posting these photos with the listing. This way folks could see everything it had to offer, but most likely what it was lacking would have been a game changer for prospective igloo dwellers. That would be a toilet!
While this was a joke, it did remain on the Airbnb site long enough for word to get around, but when the company got wind of the igloo, they deleted the listing. They were really nice about it saying that the igloo looked as if it was well-constructed, but “it has failed to meet our occupancy standards and has been removed from our search results.”
Airbnb is a website that lists houses, apartments and even rooms for rent to vacationers or travelers. It is a great way to see the world by staying in a dwelling that’s not set up for tourists and it gives the homeowner some extra cash in their pocket. They offer rents for just a weekend or for extended periods of time. The site offers a wide variety of abodes from igloos to castles and everything that would fall in between!
