iFLY is the largest Indoor Skydiving operator in the world. They opened their new location in Lincoln Park on Wednesday March 16th. iFLY Lincoln Park is located at 800 West Scott Street (1 block north of Division St on Halsted). Their Lincoln Park location is the company’s 17th iFLY facility in the U.S.
iFLY allows you to ‘skydive’ in a very safe and fun environment. The skydiving is performed in a clear enclosed cylinder that is approximately 20 to 25 feet high. The base of the cylinder is a cable mesh that allows the ridiculously powerful fans to create the skydiving effect.
The key ingredient that makes the experience incredibly safe is that there is an iFLY safety instructor in the cylinder with you to ensure that you have a safe and memorable experience. If necessary, during flight the safety instructor will remind you how to position your arms, legs, and head during flight. The goal of the first flight is to learn how to maintain stability (it’s harder than you think). At different intervals, the flight instructors will enter the cylinder alone and will ‘perform’ acrobatics that are mesmerizing.
Upon arriving at the lobby of the iFLY facility, you will register at the kiosk. You will need to inform them if you have back, shoulder, heart issues, or other medical issues. Once you proceed to the main part of the facility you will need to select your flight suit, helmet, and goggles. They do have a bank of secure lockers for your valuables.
Before entering the skydiving cylinder, everyone must complete a training session in an adjacent classroom. You will receive basic instructions on how to position your body during flight.
iFLY’s marketing brochures state that “people of all ages and abilities can experience human flight”. I must admit that they are 100% right. During my visit I saw very small children and a senior citizen skydiving. I had never skydived in my life and I was able to quickly achieve stability and enjoy the feeling of free-falling. As mentioned earlier, the fans that create the cushion of air are powerful and smooth. There is a fan operator that will manually adjust the speed of the fan depending on the weight of the individual.
iFLY is a perfect for all levels of skill… from beginner, to novice, to experienced expert.
I can’t think of a better outing for the family, friends, or corporate events.
The bottom line is that you no longer have to jump out of a perfectly good airplane to enjoy skydiving.
