It’s Christmas, the season of giving, and everyone is out shopping for gifts. Their intentions are good, the spirits high and their shopping carts full. They may even have made lists of what they want to look for to give each friend and family member. Yet, every Christmas almost everyone ends up with clothing that doesn’t fit, apparel and accessories that end up at Roundabouts Consignments and a few things that are regifted or donated to Goodwill. Here are a few ideas to keep in mind as you shop that may help you choose gifts that will be kept, used and enjoyed.
If you want to give clothing and you’re not sure of someone’s size, ask them. It’s not rude or tacky to be honest. It it’s someone you are with often, look at the tags in their jacket, sweater or slacks. Make a note that her pants are a size 10 Curvy Fit from Kohl’s so you’ll know exactly where to look and what size to buy. If her jacket is a size 2X from Kmart, look for a velour or fleece top in that size at Kmart. Never fall into the trap of thinking that something too large will be fine. Many women do not like to wear loose, baggy clothing and want something that fits more closely.
When choosing apparel and accessories, do as much shopping as possible at mid to upper range department stores. Nobody wants to open a gift that looks and feels cheap. One twenty dollar top can be better than five four dollar tops. Look for popular house brands, such as Kim Rogers at Belk, Croft & Barrow and SONOMA life + style at Kohl’s and Peck & Peck and V Cristina at Stein Mart for excellent quality and low to moderate prices. Use coupons whenever possible and watch for buy one, get one free and 50-60% off sales.
Everyone has certain things they will love and use and other things that will be relegated to a shelf in the closet. If you’ve never seen a particular friend wear a scarf, don’t give her one; if you’ve never seen her wear a hat, resist the pretty faux fur pompom caps. Watch what people are wearing and take your clues from that. If a family member wears a zip-front robe every night, a new one is surely a good choice. If a coworker wears leather driving gloves every morning and evening, she’ll probably love a new pair. If your best friend loves chunky statement necklaces, look for one on sale at Hamrick’s
If you choose well, fewer and fewer things will be returned, refunded and exchanged. New gifts will not be relegated to distant shelves, regifted or taken to a consignment shop. Shop well, shop smart and make the most of the Christmas countdown sales happening this week.
As always, maximize your style and minimize your spending.
