Have you ever felt embarrassed about playing video games? Afraid to tell your new girlfriend that you love playing video games? Worried about your Mom and Dad’s reaction when they find out you still play video games on the weekend?
Fear not my friend – Hasbro has teamed up with Ubisoft to give you salvation. Board Games on your PS4 or Xbox One! Hasbro Family Fun Pack: 4 great games in 1 has arrived. This compilation includes the classics Risk, Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, and Scrabble.
Scrabble seems so simple but it can get really competitive with a loved one. The joy that comes from spelling “cats” on a triple word score and taking the lead cannot be understated. There is an auto in-game word scoring system so you can try different words and see if they are valid. Just when you think you pulled off the win, your best friend clears all of their tiles and you get punished for getting stuck with the “Z”. Of course everyone has childhood memories of playing Monopoly with family and friends. The rush to buy all the properties and avoid bank penalties keeps you on edge the entire time. And it’s impossible for your little sister or brother to get so upset they flip the board upside down and all the pieces fly across the room. This video game Monopoly comes with the traditional board and a “newer” version with a complete makeover of moving board icons. Although I never played Risk when I was younger, it is deceptively addictive. Different kinds of gameplay allow the user to go up against the AI in a multitude of ways. Options for using different combinations of dice are also available. Trivial pursuit is the only game here which leaves something lacking. The original board game is a slow crawl full of mind boggling questions and challenging categories. This video game version more closely resembles a game show than a board game. Something is lost in translation as the hectic nature of answering, often simplistic, questions within a time limit doesn’t make the reward of winning as feel like a big accomplishment.
When playing these simple games, the competitive nature in people takes over and they forget that they are playing “video game”. There is something that comes over us as we move past GO or get a triple letter score on “Q”. Whether we take over a continent or guess which soccer star won it all for Brazil many years ago, these games tap into that long lost “Board Game craving” we all have and reminds us of times when we were kids playing with our mom and dad, or brother and sister.
I know video games get a bad rep these days with all the warfare, nazi zombies, headshots, and hours lost playing MMOs and team death-match, but this gem will help wash away the bad taste in your mouth when you get a nasty look from your girlfriend, wife, or parents. So many people are under the assumption that all video games are bad, but with this new game of revised “oldie” board games, we can bring the fun to everyone and video game haters into the light.
