As mentioned in the previous two articles in this series on “Income Taxes and Signs of Infidelity,” joint income tax returns can expose a cheating mate. The 4 real-life stories below show how information on the 1040 form alerted an unsuspecting husband and 3 unsuspecting wives about their spouses’ extramarital affairs.
Salary discrepancies expose a cheating husband and a cheating wife
“Working overtime” is a common excuse cheating spouses use to cover up the time they spend with their secret lovers. If the salary listed on Line 7 doesn’t reflect the amount of overtime a spouse claims to have worked last year, it could be a sign of a workplace affair. NOTE: Some employees receive “comp time” for extra hours worked, instead of overtime pay. Find out if this is the case, to avoid falsely accusing your mate. If the figure on Line 7 differs from your spousesW-2 Form, there are several possibilities, including the two below:
Max worked plenty of overtime last year, often pulling a double shift – at least that’s what he led Tammy to believe. However, looking over their joint tax return and cross checking it with Max’s W-2 Form, Tammy was surprised to see that there was no indication of all the overtime Max claim to have worked. In fact, his salary was almost identical to his salary the previous year when Max worked no overtime at all. before. Upon further investigation, Tammy found out the “overtime story” was just a cover for the affair Max was having with a woman on his job.
Chad was surprised to find that Angela’s salary was considerably lower than he expected it to be. Although he’d never asked Angela about her salary, he assumed that she earned much more money than their tax form indicated, because she was constantly buying new clothing and jewelry, often went to day spas to be pampered, and took at least 2 or 3 separate vacations each year. There was no way the salary shown on Angela’s W-2 Form could possibly cover all these things. Where did the extra money for all these luxuries come from? Checking deeper into the matter, Chad discovered that Angela had a wealthy lover who was supplementing her income and showering her with money and expensive gifts.
Other sources of income expose a secret extramarital affair
Other sources of income must also be recorded in various places on your joint income tax form. These additional sources of income could include interest from banks accounts you didn’t know your spouse had, proceeds from the liquidation of joint assets by your spouse without your knowledge or consent, unemployment checks, profits from a business on the side that your spouse never told you about, rental from property you never knew your spouse owned, and more.
Unemployment compensation must be included on Line 19 of the 1040 Form. Lenita was taken aback to see figures on this line because to her knowledge, her husband Tyrik had never been unemployed. He left home every morning at his usual time, and returned home as usual at the end of the day. This raised a number of questions in Lenita’s mind. If Tyrik had lost his job or had been laid off from work, why hadn’t he told her? And where had Tyrik been spending his time all day? Lenita hired a private investigator who found that Tyrik, 31, had been hanging out with a wealthy businesswoman, 20 years his senior. Tyrik had even taken a week-long vacation with this woman, telling Lenita it was a company-paid business trip.
Seeing figures on line 30, indicating that penalties were incurred for early withdrawals from their CD and Money Market accounts prompted Dorothy to discreetly check the balance on all their other joint accounts she and her husband had. Even though over 2/3 of the money was missing, Craig had never mentioned anything to Dorothy about withdrawing funds. Dorothy wondered about the missing money but was afraid to question Craig. She decided to him the benefit of the doubt, which turned out to be a major mistake. Six months later Craig left Dorothy for his mistress, and filed for divorce – a turn of events which not only shocked Dorothy but left her emotionally and financially devastated, and legally unprepared.
