There are a lot of stigmas that come with living in Los Angeles. The next time you’re traveling out of town and you tell someone you meet that you’re from Los Angeles, pay attention to what they ask you. For example, these are all real life questions I have been asked on more than one occasion: “What movie stars do you know?” All of them. “I’ve been to LA once. Why does everyone drive so crazy?” We’re in a hurry to wait in traffic. “Have you ever seen a police officer/gang member murder someone?” Everyday. Also, that’s a pretty messed up question to ask someone. And my recent personal favorite, “How is everyone from LA so fit and attractive?” It’s a prerequisite to moving there.
This natural response from someone who has never been to Los Angeles, but believes in the preconceived stereotype that Angelenos are all “fit and attractive” begs the question: Just how important is staying fit when you live in Los Angeles?
This question goes far beyond egotistical vanity. First, it goes without saying that a daily exercise regimen is an important part of your overall success as a human being. Perhaps this mentality is missing from our Midwestern friends, where I hear this question most often. The truth is that, whether you work in “the industry” or not, being fit and attractive is one of the best ways to help you reach your career goals. When other people see that you’re committed to improving yourself (or at least making yourself look presentable), then they are more likely to do business with you, and in a city where everyone has a career-oriented agenda, you’ve got to get an edge on the competition anyway you can.
What is the secret that most Angelenos use to stay fit and attractive all year long that? Now that we have embraced the stigma, it’s time to bring other cities up to speed.
1. Get a gym membership. Sure, you could buy the weights, workout at home and convince yourself that you’re saving money in the long run, but a gym membership is a commitment to your fitness. Plus, you can get a monthly membership to most gyms in Los Angeles for the price of about 4 cups of coffee. What is the key to a successful day at the gym? See number 2:
2. Stay hydrated. Not only is this the only way to survive a summer living in Los Angeles, but sipping cold water throughout the entire day fuels the body, giving you more energy, more motivation to succeed and even contributes to your happiness. This is why we see most Angelenos gearing up for the summer by carrying a reusable stainless steel water bottle with them everywhere they go, like the ones at The Coldest Water. People are integrating these water bottles into their daily lives because they are convenient, stylish and the best thing you can do for both your body and the environment.
3. Stop stressing. Realize that things like time-syphoning traffic and the barista messing up your order every single morning is just a part of life that is outside of your control. The sooner you accept the small annoyances for what they area and stop sweating the small stuff, the sooner you will be able to get more enjoyment out of life. Lower stress levels are also directly related to improved levels of overall fitness and attractiveness.
So whether you’re about to make your next big career move or go on your next date with a B-list celebrity, remember that in order to be successful all you need to do is hit the gym with your reusable stainless steel water bottle in tow, and when it takes you an hour to get there because of traffic, just laugh it off.
