Malala met her rescuer in a most unusual way; the dog had been abandoned in an Atlanta, Georgia area home and left with no food or water. Her emaciated body indicated she had recently given birth to puppies, but her puppies were no where to be found; no one knows if they lived or died. When neighbors could no longer bear hearing Malala’s cries of hunger, despair and loneliness shortly before Thanksgiving, they called Animal Control to pick her up.
Brought to a rural shelter where dogs are often euthanized because of lack of adopters and lack of funding, Malala was originally placed in a kennel with five other dogs. Tragically, Malala had been so depressed and apparently had already given up on life, shelter staff stated she just sat there as the other dogs tore her to shreds. Malala’s fate was nearly sealed; that is until a volunteer from Angels Among Us Pet Rescue met her. Happening quite by chance, or possibly divine intervention, Niki Davis walked past the dog’s kennel in an overcrowded shelter where more than 300 dogs – often taking in 40 dogs a day came in lost and defeated.
“I was on my last row of dogs and this little girl was all alone. Curled up in her bed. I was walking right by. Wasn’t gonna stop. I know that when a dog isn’t in a run with 5-6 dogs, it usually means they aren’t dog friendly, and those dogs have less than a zero chance of making it out,” Niki wrote on Facebook. “As I walked by, the shelter manager peeped around the corner and said ‘she is my favorite.’ Really? 300 dogs and she is your favorite? He said, ‘she was abandoned in a home. Her family moved and left her. No food. No water. She was left to die. She probably looked out that window and watched them drive away. She probably wondered if they were ever coming back.'”
And when the other dogs attacked her, the shelter manager stated, “… she never moved. She sat there in all her pain. She is a gentle sweet soul. She isn’t a fighter. She is a lover. She IS special…Believe me.” Rescuing the dog out of the shelter would not be easy however. The organization saves dogs through foster home arrangements, and at the moment, everyone was full. And when the two met, all Malala wanted was to be comforted and walk away from her misery. Just like a true rescuer, Niki didn’t give up – sure she doesn’t go on vacations or buys designer shoes, but she never stops fighting for each and every life. No one can save them all, but the very next day Malala was rescued from the shelter.
