Paced by the double-double of starting forward Anna Strickland, the HBU Huskies women’s basketball team downed the Sam Houston State Bearcats by the score of 67-63 at Sharp Gymnasium in Houston, Texas on Saturday, January 30, 2016. With the win, the Huskies move to 4-5 in Southland Conference action and 9-10 for the season. The Bearcats dropped to 4-6 in conference play and 8-12 for the season.
Sam Houston jumped out to a 19-14 lead after the first period of play, with Shernise Robertson accounting for eight of the Bearkats 19 points. The Huskies battled back in the second period, outscoring the Bearkats 17-9 to take a 31-28 lead into the locker room at halftime. Strickland poured in seven of the Huskies 17 second-period points to lead HBU.
The Huskies increased their lead to seven points in the third period, outshooting Sam Houston 18-14; giving HBU a 49-42 lead with 10 minutes to play. In the fourth period, SHSU outscored the Huskies 21-18, but it was not enough to overcome the offensive play of the Huskies in the second and third periods.
Strickland scored 17 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for her fifteenth double-double of the season. Forward Monet Neal added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Rachel Arthur and Heidi Sihvola each chipped in 10 points. Robertson tallied 28 points for the Bearcats, her second highest point total for the season, while Angela Beadle and Laurynn McGowen added 12 and 11 points respectively. The Huskies held the lead for most of the game (26:05 minutes) in addition to scoring 17 points off the bench and 14 second chance points. They also led the game in points in the paint (36-22), and offensive take-a-ways (18-14).
Next up for the Huskies will be a February 3 game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a 7 p.m. CST tipoff in Corpus Christi. They will return to the friendly confines of Sharp Gym on Saturday, February 6 with a 4 p.m. CST matchup against Stephen F. Austin.
